Review
“Hulk” isn’t a complete success, but it is an admirable comic book film.
The plot: Scientist Bruce Banner is involved in a lab accident which causes him to transform into a powerful green giant monster whenever he gets angry. Naturally, he has to be be contained as his “outbreak” cannot be controlled. As if that weren’t stressfyk enough, Banner must also face problems regarding his father and love interest Betty.
Upon release, director Ang Lee’s “Hulk” really divided audiences. Some people flat-out loathed the film while others found it to be a thoughtful and stylistic take on the comic book title. Personally, I am a fan of “Hulk,” although I am fully aware that the film has its flaws. I really could have done without the Hulk dogs, the heavy handed father issues and the science babble.
Complaints aside, however, I admire the fact that Ang Lee took a risk by not making this a commercial comic book film. Even though the film is littered with the occasional big budget action set pieces (such as the intense desert battles), the movie is mostly a character driven piece that tackles themes of love, regret, and of course anger. The most impressive aspect of the film though, is the comic book panel style editing by Tim Squyres. To this day, no comic film has taken this inventive and unique approach which is a shame as it is both effective and visually appealing.
Summary: While the recent “The Incredible Hulk” is superior in every, “Hulk” still remains a fun and curious experiment by visionary director Ang Lee.
Picture and Sound
The big green guy looks superb in 2.35:1 1080P Hi-Def. Granted, the dirt specs are a bit of a nuisance, but overall this is a top notch transfer.
The DTS-HD 5.1 audio track packs a punch. The explosions and action really sounded impressive on my speaker system.

* “The Incredible Ang Lee” is a 14 ˝ minute featurette on the director and his unique vision.
* “Evolution Of The Hulk” (16:00) is the best extra as it covers the character’s creation, the comics and contains interviews with comic industry professionals.
