“I Know What You Did Last Summer” fails to deliver any scares.
The logline: A hit-and-run car accident tears apart the lives of four teens. A year after the tragedy, the teens begin to receive strange messages about the incident. Even worse, someone is stalking them and wants them dead. Who is out for revenge? Back in 1997 “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was a hip horror flick, but now it seems tame and is rather suspense free. I think the main problem I had was that the film’s production values were too high. Slashers are meant to be gritty, rough and low budget. They aren’t meant to be glossy and neat looking. In addition, screenwriter Kevin Williamson attempts to make this a semi-psychological horror film, but he’s not kidding anyone. This is a slasher movie plain and simple. Much like “Urban Legend,” ‘Summer’ contains a lot of would be stars such as Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Even though I like Gellar and Phillippe, I can’t say they did their best work here. All of the main characters here are selfish idiots who get themselves into this dangerous situation to begin with. It’s hard to have sympathy for any of them, especially when all they do is scream and curse at each other throughout the running time. This is one of those horror films in which you certainly root for the killer.
Picture and Sound
The widescreen 2.40:1 1080P picture quality is even sharper than the “Urban Legend” transfer. The colors were especially impressive during the gorgeous nature/coast shots.
The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track is fine overall, but it’s far from an A or A+ rating.
Extras
* Sony trailers and Blu-ray ad.
* Kula Shaker music video.
* A lengthy 27 minute featurette titled “Now I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
* A boring commentary track by Jim Gillespie and Steve Mirkovich.
* The highlight of the entire disc is a creepy, atmospheric 10 minute short horror film by director Jim Gillespie titled “Joyride.” This is a must watch for any horror fan. There is also an optional commentary track for the short by Jim Gillespie.

Nicholas Cage stars in this non-stop action flick on Blu-Ray from Disney. Supporting cast members includes John Malkovich, John Cusack, Colm Meaney, a young Dave Chappell and Ving Rhames. Steve Buscemi also makes an appearance as a mass murderer psycho. Buscemi makes the most of his role, at one point escaping to find a little girl playing in a trailer park and comparisons to the floating daisy scene from the original "Frankenstein" are obvious. The plot involves Cage, an Army ranger, who has been wrongfully incarcerated for years for a self-defense murder. He has kept in contact with his wife and daughter and looks forward to getting paroled. Unfortunately he hitches a ride on a prison plane that is taken over by criminal escape artist John Malkovich and company. He is then forced to either go along with the escape plan or let his cellmate, a diabetic, die from lack of insulin. Cusack, who is sympathetic to Cage's plight, gets Cage to stay on board to help defeat Malkovich's plans for escape. Picture quality is excellent in 1080p. The picture quality is what you would expect from a Disney Blu-Ray disc, stunning detail in every scene, with bright vivid colors. Colm Meaney's Corvette never looked better. The soundtrack options are uncompressed 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit), Dolby 5.1 in English, Spanish and French; the soundtrack is outstanding, especially in the action sequences. There are no new extras on this high defnition disc; a disappointment but all the original extras from the standard dvd are offered. The few that are included are A View From Above and The Destruction of Las Vegas plus the theatrical trailer. Extras are offered in 1080p and 480i . Disney is also offering a trade up rebate of $10.00 for the disc if you own it in standard DVD. Details to receive the rebate are enclosed.
