Hollywood's new push for 3-D has attracted more people back into theaters with some stunning results in production and this is the first of many 3-d projects in the works. In theaters, the system is different and you where polarized glasses for the 3-D effects. For this Blu-Ray release, New Line chose to use alternative 3-D glasses. They are still two colors but not Blue/red, as was the case with the Hannah Montana concert earlier this year. Instead, the lenses are green and magenta. This Blu-Ray disc also contains the 2 D vesrion of the film and a digital copy for your ipod. The story stars Brendan Fraser as an impoverished college professor, who has taken the reins over from his brother, who has been lost on an expedition. Fraser is haunted by the loss and when his nephew (Josh Hutcherson) comes to visit, he discovers some artifacts that lead him and his nephew to Iceland to try and locate him. Once there, they meet an attractive guide (Anita Briem) whose father was also interested in exploring the inner Earth. When they go up the mountain to retrieve data from an instrument, they are caught in a cave-in and thus begins their journey.
Many fantastic things happen along the way; some made for a 3-D viewing audience. A thrilling mine car ride, glowing birds that fly out of the screen, water droplets surrounding the characters are just a few of the effects. There is also a lot of humor in the film, much like the humor in the Fraser "Mummy" pictures. The 3-D picture is the best I've ever seen for home theater. The 3-D effects are very effective. The only downside with any of these home systems is the filtered colors, which makes the spectrum in the film very limited. However, in a film such as this, which is mostly shot on dark sets and locations, the 3-D works for the most part, despite the color limitations. I found the green/magenta filetring to be more effective in producing a 3-D effect then the traditional blu/red filtering. Figures and backgrounds where sharp without any out of focus areas. Sound is disappointing for Blu-Ray, only Dolby digital 5.1; no lossless. As such, the soundtrack is not as effective in the action adventure as it could have been. Extras include commentary from Fraser and director Eric Brevig, a lengthy documentary about "Hollow Earth" theorists, a day in the life of young actor Josh Hutcherson, and how to make Dinosaur Drool, a short segment about one specific scene in the film. I can highly recommend this 3-D version of "Journey To The Center Of The Earth" on Blu-Ray. While colors were limited, the effects are fun and well worth watching more than once. You get 4 pair of colored glasses and the humor and action of the film keep you entertained throughout. Downsides include only Dolby digital 5.1 sound and less than spectacular extras but on a good high deifnition system, this film is a lot of fun. 3-D will not work with any film, but on this one it does.

Of all the films I've watched on Blu-Ray, this has got to take the prize for NOT being a reference disc. This 3 hour, all star packed war film has enough problems and this Blu-Ray release doesn't make it any better . As I watched the first terminally long hour of dialog ridden set up, I kept wondering when the high defintion scenes would finally arrive. Many of the film's scenes are fog shrouded due to the weather or camera style, which has always irritated me when it's used for an entire picture. So, don't pick up this film expecting a great show off disc for your system. If you own the standard dvd of the film, you won't see any difference. Sound is a bit better as this disc offers a DTS HD MA soundtrack.
