"King Of California" is a quirky and touching little seen gem from First Look Studios. For the love of cinema, seek this film out.
The story: Miranda has spent several years alone as her kooky father Charlie has been at a mental institution. Now, after being released from the institution, Miranda finds that her father hasn't changed much. Instead of strengthening his relationship with his daughter and getting a stable job, Charlie is on a quest to find a lost Spanish treasure that he believes is buried somewhere under a Costco. Oddly enough, Miranda decides to support her dad by helping him out. Is there really treasure or is he still mad?
It may not sound like it from the plot summary, but "King Of California" is a deep movie that is full of life. On one hand, the movie is a poignant journey about looking for lost treasure in a world lost to urban sprawl. On the other hand, the script deals with the heartwarming and tragic relationship between a father and daughter trying to reconnect with each other. Of course, the characters wouldn't have come to life had it not been for Michael Douglas and the ever so talented rising star Evan Rachel Wood. Both actors give incredible and utterly believable performances. I can't believe these two were overlooked during Awards season. It's a shame this film did not get the recognition it deserved.
Picture and Sound
The 1.85:1 widescreen picture quality is fairly clear for an indie film.
The Dolby Digital Plus 5.1, Dolby Digital 2.0, and DTS audio tracks sounded rather flat. They sounded more like mono tracks in my opinion.
Extras
* 4 1/2 minutes of outtakes.
* 11 First Look trailers including "Day Zero," "The Proposition," and "King Of California."
* "The Making Of King Of California" (9:58)- A typical making of featurette with interviews and character and story descriptions.
* Commentary by Mike Cahill, Jim Whitaker, Dan Bishop and Richard L. Fox. The group reveal interesting facts, technical info., and scenes/ideas that were cut due to budgetary reasons.

“Heroes,” which revolves around super powered humans all across the globe, was a massive hit in its first season. People couldn’t seem to get enough of the show and the characters (especially Hiro and Claire). However, when season two rolled around, there was a huge backlash against some new characters and the story arcs involving a virus. After viewing the second season, I can’t say I fully understand the criticisms. Granted, the second season does have its flaws. I personally could have done without Maya and Alejandro, the backpack rescue mission in the finale, anything involving Nikki, and Peter’s Ireland adventure. Even with those complaints, there is still much to admire in this season. I found that several of the new characters really spiced up the show, especially Elle and West. Elle, played by the superb actress Kristen Bell of “Veronica Mars” fame, is a nice complex character who can be both good and bad. West (Nicholas D’Agosto) is a kind hearted “good” guy character who makes for a great love interest for Claire. Among the other aspects of the season I enjoyed were Hiro’s adventures in Feudal Japan, learning about the character’s parents past, as well as seeing how Sylar can still be evil even without his powers. I can’t wait to see Sylar (and other villains) take center stage in season three which is being dubbed “Villains.” Overall, I would recommend checking out the second season of “Heroes.” Sure, it’s not perfect, but neither was season one. With intriguing new characters, action-packed episodes like “Four Months Ago,” and plenty of plot twists, there’s enough here to satisfy fans of the series. Nick Lyons
