Review
“Kitaro” is an ultra silly children’s film.
“Kitaro,” which is based on the Manga series of the same name, revolves around a group of evil fox spirits attempting to obtain a powerful stone. Standing in there way is a heroic blue haired yokai spirit named Kitaro, his family and even a human brother and sister whom are trying to find their father. As I watched “Kitaro,” I was often baffled by what I was seeing. Why you may ask? To put it simply, this is one crazy and bizarre children’s film. The Yokai universe depicted in this film is just too cartoony and silly for my taste. Throughout the 103 minute run time, we see a Catgirl, a farting Ratman, talking plaster, a Sand Witch, a talking umbrella, a Yokai rock concert, flying cotton, flying wooden sandles, singing fireballs, and a walking talking eyeball. Is it imaginative? Yes, but it doesn’t exactly work in a live action format. “Kitaro” would have been much easier to swallow as an animated series. Instead, it comes off like the disastrous “Monkeybone” in that it is undoubtedly visually interesting, but overall it is mostly an embarrassing misfire.
Picture and Sound
The 1.85:1 1080p picture is clean looking throughout. Some of the visuals are quite striking here on Blu-ray such as the murky water, the forest and the colorful afterlife world.
Viewers can choose from Japanese DTS HD 6.1, Japanese Dolby TrueHD 6.1 and English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio tracks. As the English dub is absolutely horrendous, I would recommend listening to the far superior Japanese audio tracks which are rich in sound.
Extras
* “Kitaro” Theatrical trailers and TV spots and other BCI affiliated trailers..
* “Yokai In The City”- A seemingly never ending 36 minute special in which people in a one hundred eyed monster, one-eyed monster, ghost, a fuzzy cave creature, a Tiki eque creature, Dharma, Tengu Police, Bean Polisher and water and perversity imp costumes wanders around the city streets.
* A 10 minute “Making Of Yokai In The City.”

"Galapagos" is a visually stunning BBC production, shot with high definition cameras. If you liked "Planet Earth", you'll also enjoy this 150 minute documentary. The narration is a bit overly dramatic in parts as the island's harsh environment unfolds in amazing footage. You will see Albatrosses mating, owls hunting for smaller birds, blue footed boobie birds (no joke) hunting in unison for fish, finches using tools to get grub worms, and some spectacular erupting volcano footage. It is definitely a show off reference disc for Blu-Ray. Narrated by Tilda Swinton, the soft spoken actress' voice is a little too mellow for such a documentary but the footage will keep your eyes open. The sound is only two channel stereo (a let down) and no options or extra features. Still, it is a grand tour of these strange islands that are ever evolving and are host to some of the most fascinating creatures on the planet.
