“Kitaro,” which is based on the Manga series of the same name, revolves around a group of evil fox spirits attempting to obtain a powerful stone. Standing in there way is a heroic blue haired yokai spirit named Kitaro, his family and even a human brother and sister whom are trying to find their father.

As I watched “Kitaro,” I was often baffled by what I was seeing. Why you may ask? To put it simply, this is one crazy and bizarre children’s film. The Yokai universe depicted in this film is just too cartoony and silly for my taste. Throughout the 103 minute run time, we see a Catgirl, a farting Ratman, talking plaster, a Sand Witch, a talking umbrella, a Yokai rock concert, flying cotton, flying wooden sandles, singing fireballs, and a walking talking eyeball. Is it imaginative? Yes, but it doesn’t exactly work in a live action format. “Kitaro” would have been much easier to swallow as an animated series. Instead, it comes off like the disastrous “Monkeybone” in that it is undoubtedly visually interesting, but overall it is mostly an embarrassing misfire.
