Review
“The Love Guru” is a cinematic travesty.
The plot (if you want to call it that): The Guru Pitka is hired to help a struggling hockey star get back on his game and hopefully win back his wife.
As many of you may know, Mike Myers stated that he tested his Guru character out during stand-up/comedy acts. Apparently, the character was so well liked that he decided to base an entire film around this character. What I would like to know is WHO exactly laughed at his Guru character because I sure didn’t. The Guru is an embarrassingly loud, cartoony, obnoxious character that nearly made me ill every time he was on screen (especially during the utterly frightening CGI Myers child scene). It doesn’t help that the character becomes mixed up in some repugnant scenes such as the elephant sex scene (don’t ask) and a piss mop fight.
As if Myers wasn’t bad enough, both Ben Kingsley and Justin Timberlake both manage to give the worst performances of their career. I’m not much of a Timberlake fan, but he has been decent in a few roles (namely “Black Snake Moan”). In this, however, he plays an over the top well endowed clichéd Canadian. As for Kingsley, I never thought he would stoop lower than “Bloodrayne,” but I was wrong. His role as a cross-eyed farting Guru is in fact his worst to date.
The ONLY positive aspect of this movie is a small role by Stephen Colbert, who plays a drug addicted announcer. Sadly, he is not in the movie nearly enough.
Summary: Audiences stayed away from “The Love Guru” in theaters and you should do the same when it hits Blu-ray (and DVD). Let’s just all forget this movie happened and wait for “Austin Powers 4” instead.
Picture and Sound
The widescreen 1080P picture quality contains a sharp looking transfer. The movie is rather colorful at times and the colors certainly look very vibrant.
The 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio track is too good. The music and Myers loud, annoying character sounds clearer than it should on this Hi-Def audio track.
Extras
* Digital copy.
* Theatrical trailer.
* A 4 minute blooper reel.
* 10 minutes of lame outtakes.
* An 8 minute self-explanatory featurette titled “Hockey Training For Actors.”
* “One Hellava Elephant” is a 6 minute featurette on the elephant puppet used in the film.
* The best extra is titled “Back In The Booth With Trent And Jay” which contains cut scenes with the game announcers (one of which is played by Stephen Colbert who provides the only laughs for the movie).
* “Mike Myers And The Love Guru- An Inside Look” (9:30)- This featurette explores where the character came from, what inspired the character, the humor, etc. Also included are interviews with the cast and director and set footage.
* 11 Deleted/Extended Scenes including an alternate ending. None of these are worth watching (just like the movie itself).
