This is one HD lovers have been waiting for and Fox does not disappoint with this Blu-Ray transfer. This is reference quality material.
If you have the double disc standard dvd, you will not get the same extras as Fox put all their efforts into the film's presentation and not the extras-What else is new? Fox still needs to deliver on extras, especially if they are charging $40.00 for a disc. There are extras, but a lot more on the special edition standard dvd.
The story is of a British Naval ship in the late 1700's, captained by Lucky Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe), who is playing a cat and mouse game with a faster, stronger French ship. Authentic detail is a real plus in this film and minute details of ship life is empahsized during its more than two hour presentation. The crew has its share of characters and troubles; a young officer is dissed by the crew, leading to tragic consequences; a young seaman loses an arm early in battle, and the ships Dr. performs brain surgery on a sailor on deck who lives. The Dr. and Captain have a unique relationship as both love music and have regular music sessions; duets for violin and cello. However, their interests clash over other interests when they reach The Galapagos Islands.
The beauty of this film is in the cinematography and that is what makes this Blu-Ray release worth every penny. Every detail from the film presentation is there, from strong black levels (check out the sillouettes of sailiors on the sails) to the grittiness of battle. The authenticity of the film is truly remarkable and will not likely be seen again. Sound is also just as good, if not better than theater. When the cannon balls fly, they rip right through your seating area in your home theater. Creaks and groans from the ship are all masterfully mixed for an incredible experience.
Extras-The disc sports a few extras but they are not worthy of the rest of the disc's content. You have a few deleted scenes in standard 480 i resolution, a historical and geographical trivia track, a pop up map showing locations during the film, personal scene selections and D-Box support. A high definition trailer is also included. While I'm happy Fox did it right on the film, they still have a long way to go on extras on Blu-Ray. If this is the best they can do, at least lower the price $10.00.
"Master and Commander-The Far Side Of The World" was already a magnificent film in large part by its performances, authenticity , direction by Peter Weir, and it's action sequences. Now its even better on Blu-Ray. However, hang on to your two disc special edition standard dvd version as extras from Fox once again come up short.
