Review
Of all the films to be released on Blu-ray, why “Mrs. Doubtfire?”
The story: Daniel is in a rut. He has been fired from his job, he just got a divorce from his wife, and now he can’t see his children much at all. After learning that his wife is looking for a housekeeper/babysitter, Daniel decides to disguise himself as an old woman named Mrs. Doubtfire in order to see his children more often. Along the way, Daniel learns how to become a better parent. “Mrs. Doubtfire” is a typical manipulative Christopher Columbus sapfest that glides on a one joke premise, and a bad one at that. I suppose if you found Robin Williams funny that you would get a kick out of this film, but alas I find his comedic roles tiresome. He’s a much better dramatic actor as the films “Good Will Hunting,” “Dead Poet’s Society,” and “One Hour Photo” clearly show. My main problem with this film is that the character of Daniel is a pathetic man. Not only does he refuse to take responsibilities for his faults, but he’s desperate, mean to his ex-wife’s boyfriend, and manages to manipulate everyone. Of course, how anyone could be fooled by his pitiful make-up job is beyond me…
Picture and Sound
The 2.35:1 widescreen picture quality is not bad for a catalogue title, even if it is grainy in spots. Still, is there anyone really clamoring to see Robin Williams in hi-def?
The 5.1 DTS HD Lossless track and the 5.1 Dolby Surround audio tracks are fine. Since the film is dialogue driven, the tracks do not have to do much.
Extras
* 5 Fox trailers.
* Two TV spots, 3 trailers, a publicity photo gallery, and theatrical posters for “Mrs. Doubtfire.”
* A 5 ½ minute original 1993 featurette that sells the film.
* 7 alternate takes of scenes.
* Make-up Application with Ve Neil, as well as make-up tests and a photo gallery.
* Behind-the-scenes photo gallery.
* 18 deleted scenes and 4 alternate scenes that involve such things as make-up, cleaning, and the ladies room.
* “Meets Mrs. Doubtfire” (5:30) has Robin Williams interviewing himself as Doubtfire.
* “A Conversation With Legendary Animator Chuck Jones” (4:00)- The highlight of the extras.
* Original pencil test, final animation sequence (with alternate backgrounds) of the animated sequence at the start.
* “From Man To Mrs. Doubtfire: The Evolution Of Mrs. Doubtfire”- A 5 part featurette that looks at the script, casting, make-up, etc.
* “Aging Gracefully: A Look Back At Mrs. Doubtfire”- Christopher Columbus and Robin Williams talk about how the film has stood the test of time. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the film has not aged well at all. This extra runs 13 ½ minutes.

Featured Review
The first Universal Blu-Ray titles that HD fans have been waiting for are about to be released and Universal has done an outstanding job with the picture, sound and extras on each disc. They have also reasonably priced the discs for added value. First up is "The Mummy" series from director/writer Stephen Sommers with stars Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz. Sommers set out to recreate the classic film of the 30's, update it and add state of the art effects, action, and a bit of humor thrown in. Universal is releasing these films to coincide with the new Mummy film about to hit theaters.
