Review

This Bob Hope double feature HD DVD set delivers some good old fashioned comedy.

“My Favorite Brunette” is a noir spoof about a baby photographer (Ronnie) who aspires to be a private eye. He gets his chance to work on an investigation when a woman comes to him for help. In typical noir fashion, Ronnie quickly finds himself getting caught up in a world of trouble when he takes on more than he can handle.

‘Brunette’ is a fun film noir parody that includes every element that we know and love about the genre. There’s the voice over narration, the snappy dialogue, and even plenty of great supporting actors (namely Peter Lorre and Lon Chaney) who are veterans of the genre. Of course, the real gem here is Bob Hope’s witty one liners. They sure don’t make jokes like they used to.

“Son Of Paleface” deals with a Harvard grad named Junior Potter who returns home to gather his father’s inheritance money, belongings, etc. Unfortunately for Junior, his father also passed on all of his problems and debt. The film co-stars Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger and Jane Russell.

The quote “Please, no applause, you might miss the plot” nicely sums up the script, but that doesn’t mean that ‘Paleface’ doesn’t have its charms. Along with Bob Hope’s hilarious portrayal of Roy Rogers and the amusing Bing Crosby jokes, the movie has a irresistable corny, cartoony, albeit playful atmosphere to it. Viewers can expect to see numerous sight gags and elaborate action/chase sequences that are actually quite impressive for the time period. At the same time, however, there are a few racist, slapsticky scenes and annoying song rhymes that might put off some folks.

Picture and Sound

The B&W fullscreen picture quality on "My Favorite Brunette" contains a lot of dirt and scratch marks. The color fullscreen print on "Son Of Paleface" is fairly clean looking aside from some dirt.

Category: HD Reviews
"The Day After Tomorrow" should have been great on Blu-Ray but I was disappointed in the overall picture quality of this disaster film. . While certain scenes are enhanced by the high definition picture, it didn't make a huge leap in quality from the standard dvd edition. Sound in Dolby and DTS HD are exceptional. With so many chances for spectacular scenes in Blu-Ray, there were none. Fox usually does a pretty god job on their Blu-Ray discs but this one got by them. Enjoy your regular standard dvd edition of this film through a good upconverter.
