The semi-autobiographical “Persepolis” revolves around the adventures of Marjane Satrapi’s (author, writer, and director of the story) life during the Islamic Revolution. In addition to seeing her grow, mature, experience life’s wonders, we also see her struggles, losses, as well as her relationship with her family.

Seeing as how most animated films revolve around cute little animals, it was refreshing to see a decidedly adult animated comic book story. The story literally evokes every emotion possible. It’s tragic, funny, touching, intelligent and has plenty to say about life and politics without being preachy.

The animated film stays close to the graphic novel of the same name, but it doesn’t quite flow as well. Additionally, the unique story structure is better suited for a graphic novel as Marjane’s story is constantly interjected with dreams, fantasies, and past tales. However, as Marjane is the author of both the graphic novel and the film, she obviously was the best person to adapt the material. Hopefully, she will continue her story by making her graphic novel “Persepolis 2” into a film next.
