Review

Since Dave Anderson has already reviewed the standard dvd, this review will mostly concentrate on the high definition aspects of the Blu-Ray edition. You can catch Dave's review here.
I will add a bit of my impressions. It's really long and the plot is really complicated and overdrawn. Johnny Depp's character is reduced to comical one-liners while Keira Knightly's Elizabeth grows immensely. The secret to Davy Jones' angst is finally revealed and Calypso shows her true self. And yes, Keith Richards shows up. While the story fits together in the end, it could have been a lot shorter and still made a good film. There are scenes not made for children due to their gore nature, so parents be warned.

Picture and Sound

Regardless of what the cover says, the picture is 1080p, not 1080i. This Blu-Ray disc is reference quality throughout. The effects are stunning and there are many scenes to choose from to show off a high definition system. The most spectacular scene is The Maelstrom, which is a main feature on the extras disc, where the two main pirate ships do battle in the middle of a gigantic whirlpool. Disney really pulled out all the stops with this series; all have excellent transfers and are regarded as some of the best Blu-Ray discs yet available. Their have been some technical issues with this disc; my advice is make sure your player has the latest firmware update. I had no problems playing it on a Panasonic BD30. Besides regular Dolby 5.1 in English and Spanish, the disc comes with an uncompressed 5.1 PCM soundtrack and if you are lucky enough to have a receiver that plays PCM, use that option. A true movie experience will be yours. The soundtrack from Hans Zimmer I found a bit overbearing at times, a bit too much bravado in too many scenes.

Extras

The second disc is where all the goodies are and there are a lot. AN exclusive Blu-Ray feature is a special on the making of the Maelstrom scene, that uses popup menus to branch to different aspects of the production. There is a ton of stuff here covering every aspect of this scene from set construction to stunts to blue screen effects. You access thes by hitting your menu buttons on your remote for selections. On the screen during your selection is a time-lapse film of the construction of the set in a huge aircraft hanger. This disc also includes bloopers, deleted scenes, a special on composer Hans Zimmer and a short bio on Chow Yun-Fat.

Summary

This Blu-Ray disc represents the state of the art in high definition in this format, along with the other Pirates Of The Caribbean films. This trilogy represents the best that Blu-Ray can offer technically-so far. I can't wait to see what Disney does with the upcoming 1.1 and 2.0 standard discs.
