Review
“The Rookie” starts out rough, but it eventually becomes a heartwarming story about following your dream.
The story: An aging pitcher named Jim Morris decides to fulfill his lifelong dream of making it to the MLB. I have to flat out say that I despised the first hour of this film. Even though it may be “based on a true story,” the first half was syrupy, sentimental, safe, and routine moviemaking. It was everything I loathed about cinema. However, when we see Jim Morris make it to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the movie actually becomes a heartwarming story of fulfilling a dream. You can say that it was the director and writer that made the film work, but that is a lie. Dennis Quaid carries the film here plain and simple. His performance of an everyday family man wanting to accomplish a lifelong goal is acting at its finest. “The Rookie” is worth seeing strictly for Quaid.
Picture and Sound
The 2.35:1 1080P picture quality may have a few dirt specs here and there, but generally the PQ is colorful and lively. Just look at the baseball fields, landscapes, and buildings and tell me they don’t look sharper than ever.
The 5.1 Uncompressed audio track, on the other hand, is quite blah. There’s not much life to the dialogue and music, even if they sound acceptable.
Extras
* Disney and Blu-ray ads and Disney trailers.
* 8 deleted scenes.
* “Spring Training” is an 8 minute featurette that gives tips on pitching, fielding, catching, and hitting.
* The 20 minute “Inspirational Story Of Jim Morris” is the only extra that matters on this disc as we get to learn more about the real Jim Morris and even see him. There are also great interviews included here.
* The commentary track with John Lee Hancock and Dennis Quaid is quite frankly dull. The two reveal behind-the-scenes details and talk about cameos, location shooting, and analyze characters.

This film about the consequences of the Iraq War stars an Academy Award Winning cast : Tommy Lee Jones, Charleze Theron, and Susan Sarandon. Jones stars as a life time soldier whose son turns AWOL soon after returning from Iraq. Jones goes to where he was stationed and begins to investigate his disappearance. He is helped by detective Theron, who is looking to make a mark on the police department by solving the case. Those looking for a war film will be disappointed as all the war footage is effectively seen through a cell phone video camera, which is a very clever way to get you hooked into the mystery as each piece of footage from the phone reveals a little bit more of the son's experience in Iraq. Technically, the blu-ray transfer is excellent, although this is not the kind of film to show off a system. The film is an excellent representation of how this war has effected families in modern America, and the price we pay for our freedom. Highly recommended.
