Review

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stars in this action-adventure flick with a brief tie -in to the "Mummy" franchise.  Johnson first appeared in the "Mummy" sequel as a CGI bad guy  and that led to this slickly produced but average action film.

Johnson plays an assassin sent to kill a ruthless walrord (Steven Brand) who has delusions of grandeur and wants to conquer the known world as "The Scorpion King". After the death of his older brother, The Rock goes on a mission of revenge with a sexy sorceress (Kelly Hu) and a gigantic Nubian warrior (Michael Clarke Duncan).  The film is action filled and some scenes, such as an initial fight between Duncan and Johnson, are a direct takeoff of Johnson's wrestling career.  There's lots of sword play and battles but very little blood letting. 
This is part of Universal's introduction to Blu-Ray and has the same U-Control and picture in picture features as The Mummy discs previously reviewed.  The picture in picture for 1.1 players contains cast and crew interviews and behind the scenes footage. This disc is short on other extras, containing only a commentary by director Chuck Russell. 
Picture and sound are again top-notch as Universal really has done an outstanding job with all of their debut discs on the high definition format with DTS HD-MA sound and stunning Blu-Ray picture.
"The Scorpion King" is a 90 minute romp with The Rock that features tongue in cheek humor but is mostly bloodless action sequences with predictable results and high production values.  It's a great popcorn movie and is made better on the Blu-Ray format with superior picture and sound.
