"Signs" is M.Night Shyamalan's third film and one of his best.  Starring Mel Gibson as a pastor who has lost his faith because of the death of his wife, Gibson is reserved but strong when it comes to defending his home and family. Joaquin Phoenix plays his brother, who has come back to the home to help out and the support his family. The kids are played by Rory Culkin as an asthmatic older brother to young Abigail Breslin, who has an eccentric role that proves vital in the end.
The film centers around this family and its great loss and adds the element of horror to the mix.

Gibson and family awake one morning to a huge crop circle in their cornfield, one of many such circles that have been discovered around the world. Gibson and family sees these things as Signs of an impending alien invasion.  News reports seem to conclude the same, including a memorable home video spot that first shows an alien.  Phoenix's reaction of seeing this is one of pure terror.  So they board up the farm house and wait for the aliens to come, but not before Gibson has an encounter with the man who accidently killed his wife (Shyamalan) and an alien in his kitchen pantry.

The film skillfully blends comedy elements with low key horror.
Shyamalan also uses the element of suspense (ala Hitchcock) to great advantage as he never gives the audience more than what the central characters see as far as the aliens go.  His taut direction leads to a intense yet satisfying experience as he delivers in tons at the end.  Science fiction fans expecting mass battles and huge alien ships will be disappointed; this is no War Of The Worlds even though the scenarios are similar.

The film looks great on Blu-Ray and continues Disney's reference quality catalog of high definition discs.  Colors are brighter and richer, textures and skin tones are realistic, and the excellent camera work can be appreciated much more on this Blu-Ray edition.  The lossless soundtrack also serves up alien sounds and clicks adding another level to the tension. 
Extras on the disc are a remix of what is offered on standard dvd editions.  Deleted scenes, a multipart making of featurette, storyboards and Night's first Alien movie that he shot as a kid.  Its a good offering for a single disc but not in high definition.

"Signs" is an entertaining film that bears repeat viewing. It's the human side of an alien invasion that makes it a winner with an excellent cast of performers and a satisfying message for the audience.  It looks and sounds great in Blu-Ray and is recommended.
