Review

“The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2” is entirely formulaic.

In this sequel, the four main characters from the first film (Bridget, Tibby, Lena and Carmen) are venturing off to college, pursuing new careers, finding love, and are generally going their own separate ways. As a result, the tight knit group seems to be slowly falling apart. Can the Sisterhood work things out in their own lives and with each other?

As I popped “The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2” Blu-ray disc in the player, I can’t say I was looking forward to watching it as I was not exactly the demographic for this film. With that said, “Sisterhood” is far better than it has any right to be. Granted, the script is formulaic and nearly every dramatic conflict and character has been lifted from a soap opera or WB/CW show, but the talented cast manages to make this watchable. The two standouts here are Alexis Bledel and Amber Tamblyn who do a fine job with the dramatic situations they are given. The somewhat unknown Blake Lively is also decent in her role, especially when she is trying to deal with family issues. The only cast member who doesn’t really shine here is the annoying America Ferrara (AKA “Ugly Betty”). She really didn’t have much chemistry with the other characters and often seemed like she was in another movie.

On a side note, I have to point out something that really bugged me about this film. It seems that every character has unlimited funds here. Not only are they constantly traveling around to various countries, but they seem to be able to attend expensive colleges without having jobs. At one point, writer Elizabeth Chandler addresses this “magic money” issue when the four women travel to Greece. We learn that Carmen’s uncle had a million frequent flyer miles and that is how they were able to travel there in the conclusion. What brilliant writing!

Picture and Sound

The 1.85:1 1080p is solid all around. The skintones and Greece locals in particular are quite sharp looking.

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track is acceptable but nothing special as this is generally a quiet film.

Extras

* Digital copy.
* 4 minute gag reel.
* 8 ½ minutes of deleted scenes.
* “Behind The Story- Go Jump Off A Cliff” (4:30)- A look at filming in Greece, the chemistry between the actresses, and the story behind the cliff jumping scene.

Gangs Of New York Blu-Ray

Category: HD Reviews

"Gangs Of New York" is a Martin Scorsese film and as such is bloody and graphic. Scorsese was given a ton of money to build an elaborate set in Italy for the filming and recruited Daniel Day-Lewis out of semi-retirement for his incredible part as "Bill The Butcher".  It is a remarkable performance to watch as Day-Lewis becomes Bill The Butcher.  Leonardo DiCaprio does a capable job in his role of Amsterdam, out for revenge for the killing of his father 16 years earlier. Cameron Diaz holds her own as the pickpocket and lover of both leading men.  I also enjoyed Jim Broadbent's portrayal of Boss Tweed, the most corrupt politician ever in America (and that is quite an accomplishment).  The sets are realistic of the time and Scorsese managed to accurately capture the atmosphere of the Five Point slum area in great detail.
