The plot: Set in the future, the film revolves around a number of military soldiers facing off against deadly and dangerous bugs from Klendathu.

Over the years, there has been much criticism of the characters, dialogue, and script of “Starship Troopers,” but some of those people might be missing the point. The script was meant to be a clever tongue in cheek satire of the media, propaganda, politics, and war in general and I think it succeeds in that respect.  Of course, I think much of the success lies with director Paul Verhoeven who can easily blend humor, action, and satire into one epic film. Not too many directors could pull of such a feat.

Even though some of the cast members act like Ken and Barbie dolls, there are still a number of good performances. The always great Clancy Brown shines here as a Drill Sergeant of sorts and Neil Patrick Harris is impressive in a non-Doogie Howser like role. Even though others may not agree, I felt Dina Meyer and Casper Van Dien did a respectable job with their roles as well. I wish I could say the same about Denise Richards…

One cannot talk about ‘Starship’ without mentioning the groundbreaking visual effects. To this day, much of the F/X (especially the Arachnids and starships) are as impressive today as they were when I saw the film in theaters back in 1997.

In conclusion, “Starship Troopers” might not be exactly like the novel of the same name, but it’s still a great science-fiction film in its own right.
