Review

“Steep” is a well made documentary.
“Steep,” a documentary on extreme skiing, is by no means the most insightful documentary film ever made, but it certainly gives viewers a greater glimpse into the world of the sport. Along with witnessing incredible skiing sequences, sweat-inducing base jump stunts, and stunning shots of snow covered mountains, we also get in-person interviews with many extreme skiers such as Glen Plake, Bill Briggs, etc. Via the interviews, we are partially able to learn why people embark on these crazy adventures in which they very well could lose their life (several of which sadly do). Of course, even as they attempt to explain their love of skiing, you still might find yourself wondering “why do they do it?” In reality, we may never really know why, but the select group of thrill seekers in this film clearly love doing what they’re doing, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Picture and Sound

The 1.78:1 1080P picture quality is somewhat of a letdown. Naturally, the stock footage varies in quality, but a lot of the footage shot for the film isn’t as striking or eye-popping as it should have been. There are a few scenes, however, when it feels like the snow is bursting into your living room.

There is not much to the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track as the sound mostly consists of voice overs and music.

* “Shooting Steep” is a 17 minute featurette about the camera equipment and shots.
* A 6 ˝ minute interview with the late Doug Coombs.
* “Q&A With Director Mark Obenhaus, Ingrid Backstrom and Andrew Mclean. This 13 minute session from the AFI fest provides info. about the skiers as well as why the filmmakers didn’t go to places like Everest.
* Commentary by Mark Obenhaus, Ingrid Backstrom and Andrew Mclean- Strictly for ski buffs only.
