“Step Up 2 The Streets” reminds us all why dance films should never be made.

The story: A rebellious, trouble-making street dancer named Andie is forced to try out for the Maryland School Of Arts after her legal guardian threatens to ship her to Texas. Naturally, she makes it in, but she does not feel at home there. She soon finds reason to stay there when she meets a nice dancer named Chase. Things worsen for Andie when she is thrown out of her street dancing team. In an “unexpected” turn of events, Andie, Chase and a group of friends soon form their own dance team. As you can no doubt guess, the two teams eventually battle it out, but who will come out victorious?

“Step Up 2 The Streets” is yet another unnecessary sequel that no one really wanted to see. I realize the dance craze is bigger than it has ever been, but do we really need so many dance films with the same empty plot? It seems like all of these dance films revolve around a tough young person who finds up influencing or inspiring others. Call me crazy, but I think it’s time to come up with a new story.

As if the clichéd story wasn’t enough, ‘Streets’ unquestionably has one of the worst scenes I have seen in years. In the opening sequence, we see a group of masked dancers “illegally” dancing in subway. Shortly after this “Breakin’” like scene, we see a dead-serious news report that basically makes it seem like these dancers are like terrorists whom are disturbing the peace. The hell?

About the only positive thing I can say about this sequel is that the dancing is indeed impressive. There are plenty of complex dances, jumps, flips, slides to keep dance lovers entertained. Of course, you could save time by just flipping on YouTube and watching neat dance moves on there as well. At least then you wouldn’t have to suffer through this nightmare.
