Review

Aside from a few scares, “The Amityville Horror” is a poorly constructed haunted house tale.

The plot: Based on true events, “The Amityville Horror” revolves around the Lutz family taking up residence in a creepy Long Island house. At first, the house seems like a dream for the family, but they soon learn that the place is not only haunted, but that it is affecting those inside it.

“The Amityville Horror” is the type of horror film that doesn’t live up to its potential. Granted, there are a few genuine scares (and jumps) involving doors and windows, glowing eyes, and dream sequences, but overall ‘Amityville’ is simply too soft. Director Stuart Rosenberg could have really scared the crap out of audiences, but instead he seems to be holding back. It doesn’t help that James Brolin walks through the role and that the screenplay (written by Sandor Stern) is an utter mess. The passage of time in this film drove me nuts as the scene transitions are so choppy, clunky and awkward. In addition, I found that details about the haunted house were too vague. Stern seemed to be more concerned with teasing the audiences rather than delving into the mystery.

Summary: “The Amityville Horror” is a slapped together horror flick that is barely worth a rent. I hate to say this, but I much prefer the recent re-make as it took full advantage of the intriguing myth.

Picture and Sound

After viewing the mediocre “Carrie” Blu-ray disc, I was worried the 2.35:1 1080p picture quality would also be poor. Alas, the ‘Amityville’ print turned out to be quite superb. Not only is the image crystal clear, but the colors are incredibly sharp (especially the Long Island locals).

The DTS HD 5.1 Lossless audio track contains highly uneven levels. The dialogue is generally way too low in spots, but the big scare moments literally explode to life on the speakers.

Extras

Aside from trailers of “The Amityville Horror,” “The Terminator,” and “Species,” there are no other bonus features.

Kingdom, The DVD and HD DVD

Category: HD Reviews
As nearly every media outlet has been reporting, films about terrorism or the war have not done well at the box office. Maybe it's because most of the films are not very good, or maybe it's because these hot button topic films aren't exactly "entertaining." Afterall, a majority of people strictly see movies to enjoy themselves or to forget their everyday lives. It should come as no surprise then that of all the 2007 terrorism films, the action packed "The Kingdom" made the most money (around $47 million). Of course, the problem with "The Kingdom" is that IT IS the least provoking and intelligent of the war/terror films released last year.
