Review

If you're looking for a decent con-artist movie with two fantastic lead actors (Paul Newman and Robert Redford), you could do a lot worse than see "The Sting."
The story: When Johnny's con artist pal Luther is tragically killed, he enlists the help of fellow con man Henry to seek revenge against the crime boss (Doyle) responsible for his death by conning him out of a significant amount of money.

Even as I revisit "The Sting" on HD, I'm still at a loss to understand the movie's appeal (let alone how it won Best Picture). Sure, Paul Newman pulls out a fun performance (especially during the card game) and the ending is enjoyable, but when it's all said and done, this is just an empty con movie with two great leads in Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Personally, I always felt their solo work (or some of Redford's directorial works) were vastly superior to this and "Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid." If you want to see some great Newman or Redford movies, check out "Cool Hand Luke," "Jeremiah Johnson," "Color Of Money," "All The President's Men," or "Quiz Show."

Picture and Sound

The 1080P Hi-Def widescreen transfer is a rather weak effort from Universal. It basically looked like a grainy DVD release. The Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio track was also mediocre.

* "The Art Of The Sting" (55 minutes)- This 3 part documentary talks about the script, pre-production work, the lasting appeal of the movie and also contains behind-the-scenes stories and interviews with stars Redford and Newman.
