Review

This film by director Brad Anderson (The Machinist) has its moments of thrills but on the whole is slow to get there.  Taken as a character study, stars Woody Harrelson and Ben Kingsley are perfect in their parts but Emily Mortimer as Harrelson's wife steals the show.  Her character is the most interesting and what happens to her character is involved with much of the storyline.

Harrelson and Mortimer are a young couple who board the Trans-Siberian train which runs from Beijing to Moscow through Siberia.  They befriend a younger couple who are eager to make friends but not for the right reasons, as you discover.  Kingsley plays a Russian policeman, bent on catching drug smugglers, who frequently use the Express to distribute drugs.  Performances are good but the script suffers from a too long build up to reveal some of the characters real objectives.

The Blu-Ray picture is good, not great as much of the landscape footage is snow laden and lacks detail.  On board scenes could have been better too but facial closeups show a lot of detail.  Sound is Dolby 5.1 and is acceptable but uninspiring.

Extras include an extensive making of featurette but little else on the disc.  A lot of the featurette contains references to the greatness of the director instead of the actual movie.

"Trans-Siberian" is a slow character study of two couples with hidden agendas which are revealed throughout the film and when they do, the plot thickens and becomes a bit of a thriller near the end.  However, much of the plot is predictabl. Acting kudos go to Emily Mortimer as things get out of control with her life.  An interesting drama-rent it first.

Galapagos-Blu-Ray

Category: HD Reviews
"Galapagos" is a visually stunning BBC production, shot with high definition cameras. If you liked "Planet Earth", you'll also enjoy this 150 minute documentary. The narration is a bit overly dramatic in parts as the island's harsh environment unfolds in amazing footage. You will see Albatrosses mating, owls hunting for smaller birds, blue footed boobie birds (no joke) hunting in unison for fish, finches using tools to get grub worms, and some spectacular erupting volcano footage. It is definitely a show off reference disc for Blu-Ray. Narrated by Tilda Swinton, the soft spoken actress' voice is a little too mellow for such a documentary but the footage will keep your eyes open. The sound is only two channel stereo (a let down) and no options or extra features. Still, it is a grand tour of these strange islands that are ever evolving and are host to some of the most fascinating creatures on the planet.
