Review

"U-571" tells the tale of a secret mission of an American submarine crew embarking on a secret mission to capture a German Enigma code machine from a stranded German U-boat.  Starring Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Jon Bon Jovi (yes, he can act), David Keith, Jake Weber (Medium)  and Harvey Keitel, comparisons to Das Boot are inevitable but the taut action and suspense of the storyline of this film gives it a flavor all its own.  While bringing out elements of the best WWII dramas, the story also explores the responsibilities of command, with lives hanging in the balance. 
A major highlight is the sound, which won an Academy Award for its jarring explosions.  Don't listen to this late at night or your neighbors will be upset with you.

The blu-ray picture is absolutely sharp and clean but colors are a bit washed out in some on top of the water scenes.  Details from the inside of the sub blow the standard dvd edition out of the water (Excuse the pun).
The Blu-Ray also includes DTS HD MA sound, a boost to its already outstanding sound.  Picture in picture commentary and features are also included on the disc.

Universal did well with this release, which is also part of an action pack Blu-Ray set, which also includes End Of Days and Miami Vice.  This is by far the strongest title in the set.
