Review

This blu-ray edition of the Oliver Stone film, which is a tribute to his stock broker father, is a big disappointment for HD fans. While the film itself is a fascinating look at the financial world of the 80's and inside trading scandals, with an Oscar winning performance by Michael Douglas as Gordon Gecko ("Greed Is Good" ), a stellar cast that includes Charlie and Martin Sheen (as a son - father duo), distinguished Hal Holbrook and smart, sultry Darryl Hannah, this so called HD title from Fox is anything but HD quality.
The story follows Charlie Sheen, a young stock broker, who gets a chance to meet his idol, millionaire wheeler dealer Gordon Gecko (Michael Douglas). After surviving Gecko's trust tests, Sheen is drawn into Geckos inner circle, which involves illegal insider trading. The young Sheen is on a roll and soon proposes a deal with a struggling airline, of which his father (Martin Sheen) is the union representative. Against his father's wishes , Sheen goes ahead with the airline deal and soon realizes the wisdom of his father and the back stabbing of Gecko.

Picture and Sound

This edition of Wall Street is a great disappoint on Blu-Ray. The film's overall look is worn with noticeable dirt in certain scenes. Colors lack punch and images are not all that sharp. Overall, even viewed on a sophisticated system, its hard to tell this is a blu-ray disc and not just a standard dvd.

Extras

This 20th anniversary edition has a lengthy retrospective titled "Greed Is Good" by Oliver Stone and cast members including Hal Holbrook, Charlie Sheen and Michael Douglas. Another "making of" documentary is also included. The disc contains audio commentary by Oliver Stone with a special introduction by the writer/director. Deleted scenes are also a part of the extras.

Summary

Fox jumped the gun on this release; it deserves much better treatment than what this disc provides, with below average picture quality for an HD title and no additional HD features. The extras included are worth watching but you can do that on the standard dvd. Skip this one if you already have the dvd version.

This remake of the classic cat and mouse game made by Caine and Laurence Olivier in the 70's is like a lot of remakes; why do it? While the set and some themes are updated, and the performances are outstanding, there is little else here that improves on the original. The original was an acting tour-de-force for Olivier and Caine in their two man show and topping that is a big challenge. Enter director/actor Kenneth Branagh to take the reins to give this film more credibility.
