Review
“Zombie Strippers” is worse than you’d expect.
The logline: A deadly zombie virus leaks into a strip club which winds up infecting strippers and patrons alike. One would expect people to be freaking out about this epidemic, but it turns out the patrons are turned on by the zombie strippers. As a result of the zombie stripper popularity, the living strippers want to become zombies so that they can become adored and liked by the crowd.
I consider myself a big horror and cult film fan, but even I found “Zombie Strippers” to be flat out tripe. The film just fails in nearly ever aspect. It’s littered with cheap f/x and sets, hideous lighting, cornball sex humor, lame references to everything from “The Treasure Of Sierra Madre” to “Aliens,” pitiful attempts at satire, and a paper thin premise that is barely suitable for a 5 minute short film.
The performances here are equally appalling. I really have to wonder why Robert Englund would taint his good name by taking a role in this film. Is he that hard up for money? As for ex-pornstar Jenna Jameson, she really doesn’t do much here except, well, strip. To some, this would be a major selling point, but I hate to say that Jameson’s looks are not what they once were. She clearly has gone overboard with plastic surgery. It was quite sad to see really.
About the only positive aspect of this film is the makeup f/x. The producers clearly spent most of their budget in this department as the zombies look fantastic. I especially liked the mouthless zombie.
Summary: If you love loads of gore and breasts in your movies, then by all means check out “Zombie Strippers.” Everyone else, however, should stay away and watch a George A. Romero zombie flick instead.
Picture and Sound
The 2.35:1 1080P picture quality is not impressive. A low budget film will always look like a low budget film even in Hi-Def. Granted, the transfer isn’t horrendous, but it’s not great by any means. I found the PQ to be often blurry and murky looking.
The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track is underwhelming. Some of the background noise and dialogue sounded garbled and the music is a bit too loud in spots.
Extras
* Sony Blu-ray ad and trailers.
* 20 deleted scenes with optional commentary by Jay Lee and Robert Englund. Most of the scenes were an attempt to provide more characterization. Let’s face it though, this film did not need to be any longer.
* BD-LIVE
* Factoid Trivia track.
* “The Dressing Room: How To Glam A Zombie” is a 5 minute featurette on the makeup f/x.
* “The Champagne Room: Behind The Scenes Of Zombie Strippers” (8:00)-This featurette contains interviews with the cast and crew, a discussion about how the movie came about, etc.
* Commentary by Robert Englund, Jay Lee, Joey Medina, and Jenna Jameson. This is an odd track. Discussion topics include wandering eyes, set experiences, fake blood and enthusiastic compliments for cast/crew members. Still, this track is more entertaining than the film itself.
