Review

She may not be the best songwriter of Fleetwood Mac (that title arguably belongs to Lindsay Buckingham), but Stevie Nicks has been the only one to successfully establish a lasting commercial entity outside of the band. Since that entity is as image based is it is musically, this two-disc CD/DVD set is probably the definitive collection of her work.
Disc 1 is a CD featuring 16 tracks mostly drawn from her solo career. There are a few Fleetwood Mac songs, but they are either re-recordings (including a seven minute version of "Dreams," recorded with Deep Dish), live versions ("Rhiannon", "Landslide") or b-sides ("Silver Springs"). A good number of her solo hits are here, but what makes this disc fun are the inclusion of lesser-known tunes ("Sorcerer," probably the best song on the album), a few oddball live tracks (a nifty version of "Edge of Seventeen," recorded with the Melbourne Symphony, and a woefully misguided cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll"). Accompanying the disc is a booklet featuring extensive liner notes, in which Nicks herself offers a detailed history of each song. Disc 2 is a 61 minute DVD of 13 music videos, shot over the course of her career. Some have aged better than others, but Nicks fans, or those nostalgic for the 80s (when she was at the height of her popularity), will enjoy it immensely.

Summary

Casual listeners are probably better off sticking with a previously released best-of album, which contains most of her hits (and is much cheaper). But for fans of Stevie Nicks, even if they have all the songs on the CD, the DVD alone is worth the price of admission. For them, this is highly recommended.

Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster

Category: Music Reviews
I was one of those guys into Metallica before the rest of the world ever heard of them. I don't say that out of some incessant desire to proclaim my loyalty as one of their true die hard fans, because I'm not. I haven't really enjoyed their musical output of the past decade, and much of what's interesting about them now has little to do with their music... the Napster debacle, guitarist James Hetfield's rehab, suing a perfume company that named one of their fragrances "Metallica," band members picking on each other in interviews, hiring a therapist to help them solve their problems with each other. I guess I make the claim because I've watched my onetime favorite band go from being young, hungry & cutting-edge, to becoming more like a dysfunctional family as they got bigger (and older). Some Kind of Monster isn't a biography or concert film, nor is it a Behind the Music type of career retrospective, although it contains some elements of all three. But it is a fairly candid documentation of a band on the verge of falling apart, much like a married couple contemplating divorce. And the title couldn't be more accurate...the film is at its best when its subjects are at their worst.

Movie Quotes

I've seen things you people wouldn't
believe. Attack ships on fire off the
shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams
glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser
gate. All those moments will be lost in
time, like tears in rain. Time to die.
