Review

This latest release from Eagle Rock, "Classic Albums" series features the recording of the first Doors album. Besides the usual crazy stories about the famed "Lizard King", the disc is a fascinating look at recording techniques back in the 60's and how the Doors exclusive sound came about. Each memebr of the band contributes individually through interviews and demostrate techniques they used for the first studio record; a bossa nova beat for Break On Through from John Densmore, the bass organ keyboard from Ray Mazarek, and Flemenco guitar riffs from Robbie Kreiger. Its a fascinating look at recording and how the process evolves.

Bruce Botnick, who recorded this and all subsequent Doors albums sits behind the mixing board and isolates individual tracks through the program, revealing some rare insights into this famous recording.
The fullscreen picture is video for the most part, except for the archival footage, and seems very current. The sound is a disppointing Dolby 2.0 but since most of the program is discussion, it doesn't matter too much. Snippets of songs are heard but not entire numbers.

Extras include extra footage from the interviews that were cut for various reasons and extensions of footage in the program.

Any Doors fan will love having this dvd to set beside their CD collection of The Doors. Its a great documentary into a band that helped change the music business and were pioneers in creating a new sound that is still popular today.

Paul In Concert On The New World Tour (1993/2003)

Category: Music Reviews
Every time I watch any of the Beatles perform the same thing happens, I get nostalgic, wispy, and feel chills. It always makes me feel good so there has never been a reason not to watch and listen to DVDs by any of the former mop tops. Paul In Concert On The New World Tour is Paul McCartney and his band, including wife Linda, performing all of the Wings and Beatles hits in a concert from 1993. It features one of the classic lineups that McCartney played with over the years with Hamish Stuart, Wix Wickens, Blair Cunningham and Robbie MacIntosh. The song selection is wonderful but the quality of the film is sub par. I found the switching from color to black and white scenes a bit irritating and the camera work could have been better. It all seems outdated in comparison to what is available today. I am accustomed to the very best sound and technical advances when viewing a DVD. These are some high standards to match but I also realize I cannot expect that kind of quality every time I view footage originally shot prior to 2000. Nevertheless, this is Paul McCartney and it was a joy to view. He is in good voice and his band is in accord on every song while providing some fine backup vocals and harmonies. This kind of timeless music is always enjoyable even if the visuals are not what you have come to expect. ?"Keith "MuzikMan" Hannaleck September 28, 2003
