Never referred to as the consummate musicians, not by any stretch of the imagination, their legacy continues to grow. They were self-taught musicians, which I feel makes their success that much more incredible and almost dreamlike in comparison to other bands of their day. Johnny Rotten thought their music was a riot, the establishment however felt they were the ultimate non-conformists thumbing their noses right in the face of society and the Queen. In effect, they were all of that and their audience loved them for it. The more negative attention they received the more their popularity gained momentum. This is the typical status quo versus the hippies and punks scenario that in the end always seems to work against the finger pointers, that being the press and politicians. The suits may have won the battle but the band won the war, as their music lives on and continues to influence budding musicians around the world. Ain?t rock ?n? roll a beautiful thing? Bloody hell!
