Review
Early on in this concert film, guitarist Mike McCready walks out of his hotel and spends a while with his band's fans, signing autographs, having pictures taken of him and shaking hands. He doesn't look the slightest bit annoyed or troubled by it, telling the camera crew afterwards that he used to do the same thing in his younger days. Perhaps scenes like this are a ploy to help remind the world that despite their worldwide fame, the five members of Pearl Jam are just regular guys, like you or me, but watching Jeff Ament hop a fence to partake of a skate park or watching Eddie Vedder humbly talking music with the organist at a church certainly goes a long way towards proving that success has not changed them very much at all. This also comes through in the concert performances captured on hi-definition video.
The band still exhibits the same strong camaraderie that was evident on their earliest music videos, standing face to face at moments and sharing giddy grins at the good fortune they have to be able to play in front of thousands of people in Italy (the footage was taken during the band's tour of the country last year). It is also gratifying to see that unlike other bands from that same era, they are unashamed of the music that catapulted them into the world's spotlight. The band runs through three songs from their first album, Ten, with the same fire and tension that made the recorded versions so compelling. They also expend a fair amount of energy elevating their newer material into the stratosphere, especially in the case of McCready whose easygoing stage presence runs counter to his furious solos and lead guitar work. While it is fairly interesting to watch the band in their off hours, goofing around Italy and staring through bus windows, it starts to wear on the viewer, taking precious time away that could have been used for more performance footage. As well, the kitschy soundtrack of accordions playing Pearl Jam songs during some of the montage sequences loses its silly appeal rather quickly. As with most discs of this kind, the longtime fans will mark this as a must have and I couldn't agree more with them. If you love the band, this will be an invaluable addition to your library. For the occasional fan, it wouldn't hurt to have this DVD, especially if you have a nice surround sound system for the live footage, but be prepared to use the fast-forward button on your remote more often than you'd like to.

Every time I watch any of the Beatles perform the same thing happens, I get nostalgic, wispy, and feel chills. It always makes me feel good so there has never been a reason not to watch and listen to DVDs by any of the former mop tops. Paul In Concert On The New World Tour is Paul McCartney and his band, including wife Linda, performing all of the Wings and Beatles hits in a concert from 1993. It features one of the classic lineups that McCartney played with over the years with Hamish Stuart, Wix Wickens, Blair Cunningham and Robbie MacIntosh. The song selection is wonderful but the quality of the film is sub par. I found the switching from color to black and white scenes a bit irritating and the camera work could have been better. It all seems outdated in comparison to what is available today. I am accustomed to the very best sound and technical advances when viewing a DVD. These are some high standards to match but I also realize I cannot expect that kind of quality every time I view footage originally shot prior to 2000. Nevertheless, this is Paul McCartney and it was a joy to view. He is in good voice and his band is in accord on every song while providing some fine backup vocals and harmonies. This kind of timeless music is always enjoyable even if the visuals are not what you have come to expect. ?"Keith "MuzikMan" Hannaleck September 28, 2003
