Review
Jackson Browne, poet, singer, songwriter made this video back in 1994, and it faithfully captures his career in this entertaining documentary-concert. The DVD includes interviews with Jackson, and his friends. We get a number of songs and excerpts during this 90 minute program. Jackson is more than a musician as well, as he has done benefit shows for many causes he feels strongly about . People speak of his passion for improving the environment and helping out people in need,, regardless of their political ties or country.
We are not only treated to interviews with Jackson;he really guides us through his own development as an artist. There are interviews with other performers, such as Bonnie Raitt, David Crosby and Graham Nash, Don Henley of the Eagles, and David Lindley, who has been Jackson's slide guitar player since the Everyman album. Between the interviews and Jackson's own personal thoughts, we are treated to concert footage with songs from his I'm Alive CD to his first album. Director Janice Engel used a great technique of editing together footage from different concerts and time periods on "Doctor My Eyes" for an effective and memorable sequence. Some songs are done personally by Jackson on the piano in his home, some duets with Lindley or Scott Thurston in the studio, and some live on stage. The entire song list includes: I'm Alive (excerpt) Farther On (excerpt) Doctor My Eyes These Days Birds Of St. Marks( A song about Nico) Your Bright Baby Blues(with the Eagles) Take It Easy-duet with David Lindley on violin In The Shape Of A Heart Everywhere I Go World In Motion All Along The Watchtower(excerpt) The Pretender For Everyman Lives In The Balance (with Crosby and Nash) Knock On Any Door My Problem Is You Too Many Angels (with support vocals by Valerie Carter) Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate Sky Blue and Black Before The Deluge (with Jennifer Warnes) Running On Empty(with the credits) It's a tremedous amount of songs and information packed into 90 minutes. I would have preferred it if the commentary had been left until the songs were over , as I am a purist but I can't complain too much as what is presented is adequate. Most of the video's material is taken from major tours that Jackson has done, most notably the Running On Empty Tour, the No Nukes Concert event, and his I'm Alive tour. We're also treated to the many talents of David Lindley, who's trademark slide guitar sound on Jackson's records can not be duplicated.
Summary
Summary-The DVD is essential Jackson Browne as we hear his thoughts and stories about certain songs and experiences in his life. The array of guest stars on the disc show how many artists admire the man for his work, and we hear for the first time from Jackson about some of his early career and family; a subject that he has kept very private over the years. The concert footage is excellent, although I would have preferred less talking through the numbers and more complete songs, instead of excerpts. It is a quality production from start to finish and fans will not be disappointed. Another quality music disc from Pioneer Artists.
