Review

Johnny Hallyday is known to many fans of '60s pop in the U.S. as the "French Elvis Presley" or as Mr. Sylvie Vartan (they have long since divorced), but in his home country the man is still an icon and a major star. So, the adoration with which he was received at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1988 is completely understandable, even if it is a little unfathomable to Western audiences.

Hallyday holds court, covered in a sheen of sweat, and backed by a huge band, as they run through what I'm guessing are some of his most well-known hits, most of them slow burning pop songs. Along the way, they pay homage to Jerry Lee Lewis with a passable version of "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and try to capture the deep bluesy sound of early rock numbers, but fail to really hit their target.

This is a disc purely for the fans of Monsieur Hallyday's work and not necessarily the best place for any neophytes to begin their journey through his long career.
