Review

The UK pop group Keane are at the heart of this DVD, as they curated a night of their favorite performers to perform a benefit concert to support War Child, a nonprofit that supports children affected by conflict.

The results are - as you might expect - an uneven collection of songs and performances, but with the proper spirit of philathropy in mind.

The artists that come off best on this disc are those that don't seem like they are trying terribly hard - particularly Brendan Benson (the singer/songwriter who is co-leader of The Raconteurs) and Lily Allen, both of which are backed up by the members of Keane. Their loose interpretations of their own songs, and in Ms. Allen's case, a fine performance of one of Keane's biggest hits, are a welcome reprieve from the somewhat preening work done by many of the other acts of the night.

This includes, unfortunately, Keane themselves. They are energetic and enthusiastic enough as a group, but lack a commanding stage presence that a live performance like this commands. This goes double for their misguided interpretation of the classic Queen/David Bowie collaboration "Under Pressure", which loses every ounce of funkiness and flash in Keane's hands.

The absolute highlight of this disc is the two songs performed by Pet Shop Boys. I've heard Neil Tennant in better voice before but their lush, chilly soundscapes and arch songwriting are still strong some 20 years after their career began, blowing these youngsters out of the water.

Rev. Gary Davis and Sonny Terry Masters Of The Country Blues

Category: Music Reviews
Shanachie Home Video continues to deliver outstanding music programs with this hour long DVD featuring blues pioneers Rev. Gary Davis and Sonny Terry. Davis was well known for his mastery of the guitar and improvisations, while Terry was known for his harmonic and whoops and hollers during numbers. Each man, both from Durham, North Carolina, and also blind, contributed greatly to the reemergence of traditional black music in the sixties. The DVD back cover contains very informative biographical sketches of the artists and background information about the musical genre known as Country Blues.
