Review

Though I'm not a die hard fan, I like Led Zeppelin, and have a few of their CDs in my collection. I don't listen to them as often as I used to, mainly because at any given moment, you can surf your radio dial and there's a good chance you'll stumble upon a Zeppelin tune. Right now there's a lot of Zeppelin hoopla. There's an umpteenth compilation CD out, their entire remastered catalogue is now available on iTunes, and the surviving members are doing a one-time reunion show in England. So it's not too surprising we're seeing a remastered special edition of this cult concert film on DVD.
Once a staple on the midnight movie circuit in the late 70s, "The Song Remains the Same" isn't really meant for people like me. It's meant for die-hards who worship Jimmy Page as God. It's meant for those who think Robert Plant's ambiguous lyrics hold the key to the meaning of life. It's meant for those who don't consider the clumsy fantasy sequences boring and pretentious. It's meant for those who don't fall asleep during John Bonham's 10 minute drum solo. The film isn't without its merits. Some of the concert footage is very entertaining, even if very few of these live performances improve on the original studio versions of the songs. The tirade by Zep manager Peter Grant regarding some stolen cash is also quite a hoot. But the fact of the matter is, for the casual fan, "The Song Remains the Same" is excruciatingly long, and downright boring at times. In addition to the concert footage, each band member is featured in fantasy sequences during selected songs, designed to reflect their individual personalities. But all they really do is drag the movie down, since they are woefully self-indulgent, and poorly shot.

Summary

Casual fans wondering what all the Zeppelin hoopla was about are probably better off picking up the DVD of concert footage released a few years ago. "The Song Remains the Same" is strictly for die-hard fans and completists, since, as a film, it remains criminally overlong, often boring and hasn't aged well despite some great audio remastering.

God Forbid - IV: Consitution Of Treason [DualDisc]

Category: Music Reviews
American death metal merchants God Forbid out-do themselves with their fourth release, "Constituion of Treason," an apocalyptic concept album that's a must for anyone who bows to the feet of bands like Slayer or Shadows Fall. Divided into three 'articles,' the 10 songs on this disc chronicle the end of the world, only to have society rebuild itself into a worse state than it was before the apocalypse. Byron Davis' typically roaring vocal delivery tends to overshadow the fact his lyrics are actually well-written and smart, but even if you don't give a crap about the words, the music does a lot to enhance the dark, oppressive mood of the story - fast and complex when it needs to be, but also quite melodic, even meloncholy at times. The DVD side of this release features a lengthy and detailed making-of documentary (with typically "edgy" grainy photography & shakey camerawork), chronicling nearly every aspect of the recording of the album. Fans are sure to love seeing these guys discuss their philosophy and approach to making their brand of music, this album in particular. A superior 'DualDisc' release from Century Media.
