Review

With the musical landscape of our iPod age concentrating mostly on hot single tracks, the old guard of rock 'n' roll are refusing to let the concept of the album die.

The UK-based promotions company, All Tomorrow's Parties, has been hosting a continuing series of concerts under the heading "Don't Look Back", where a band/artist is invited to perform their most beloved full-length in its entirety. The Zombies, the '60s pop group that is being cited as a key influence on current acts such as the Shins and Belle and Sebastian, announced earlier this year that the original line up of the band would be reforming for a one-off gig in which they will recreate their magnum opus Odessey and Oracle.
Here in the States, there's the VH-1 Classic Albums program, the 33 1/3 book series, and now the newly minted Legendary Albums Live series, which this DVD is a part of.

Is this pure nostalgia for what is quickly becoming a bygone era, or simply the music fans of the world finally getting jobs where they can pull off productions like these?

Watching the performance of Heart, and the giddy faces of the crowd that packed into the Orpheum in Los Angeles to watch the band dash through their most well known accomplishment of their early incarnation, I would hasten to say it is the latter.

A gratifying aspect of this performance is how the sisters that front the band, Nancy and Ann Wilson, are willing to let the missed notes and fumbles stand in this document. Ann's brassy alto voice, which has thickened a bit and lost a little bit of its shimmer, isn't covered up by overdubs, and occasionally falls a little flat.

Nancy on the other hand fell prey to the dangers of wardrobe selection as long bits of fabric dangling off her blouse's sleeve got in the way of her first attempt at the opening of "Crazy On You".

The Wilsons do everything they can to recreate the sound of the original tracks, including squeezing a string section on to an already packed stage and hiring a rather temperamental sounding guitar player, who adds some unnecessary flights of virtuosic fancy to the proceedings. Quite often they come close to the mark, while still carrying that little extra oomph that accompanies most live performances (especially in the case of their vicious rendition of the blues-y "White Lightning & Wine").

The band also pays homage to other album-oriented bands of their era, closing out their set with renditions of classics by Pink Floyd, The Who and Led Zeppelin.

It is gratifying to see the bands of yore like Heart and the indie groups of today refuse to let the full-length album fade away. As this DVD and all the aforementioned shows and books are proving, the album is still the place where the great bands can separate themselves from the hacks by retaining a listener's attention well past the obvious hit single.

Hopefully, this will encourage the new breed of bands and performers to step up their game and continue this grand tradition, rather than giving them another artifact to puzzle over.

Barry Manilow- The First Television Specials

Category: Music Reviews
Sometimes I really have to question why a studio releases a disc during a certain time period (in this case, the holiday season). Call me crazy, but 70's and 80's Barry Manilow TV Specials don't exactly scream "Must Buy Gift." Regardless, the 5 disc "Barry Manilow- The First Television Specials" is here and it's not a pretty sight.
