Review
Music Scene was ABC's answer to Hullabaloo after Shindig and was a bit hipper in content. Its host, David Steinberg, managed to get quite a bit past the uptight censors back then for a national network show. It was short-lived, just like the Smothers Brothers, for being a too little out there for the main stream to handle; Richard Nixon's "Silent Majority".
The DVD has four complete shows, including the last show broadcast plus 21 bonus performances from other shows. Unlike Hullabaloo, the performances are all captured live. The breakdown of the shows include the following artists and songs: Nov. 10, 1969 James Brown-Mother Popcorn Keith Barbour-Echo Park The Everly Brothers-Bowling Green Dusty Springfield-A Brand New Me; The Look Of Love Joe Cocker and Grease Band-Something The show also contains David clowning around with the Everly Brothers during a hits medley. Dec. 1, 1969 Mama Cass Elliot-New World Coming Creedence Clearwater Revival-Down On The Corner The Night Time Is The Right Time Sergio Mendez-Ye-Me-Le; Witchita Lineman Neil Diamond-Both Sides Now; Holly Holy This show features Mama Cass as co-host and some fantastic early live performances by Creedence at its best. December 22, 1969 Davy Jones-Together Frankie Laine-Jezebel; Lord You Gave Me A Mountain Gordon Lightfoot-That's What You Get For Lovin' Me; Saturday Clothes Chuck Berry-Roll Over Beethoven; Johnny B Goode Jerry Butler-What's The Use of Breaking Up This show is one of the weakest but features good , solid performances from Chuck Berry and Gordon Lightfoot January 12, 1970(Final Show) John Sebastian-She's A Lady, Rainbow's All Over Your Blues Buffy Saint Marie-Universal Soldier Lee Michaels-Who Can Want More Bo Diddley-Hey Bo Diddley Groucho Marx-Father's Day This show featured Groucho Marx as co-host and David Steinberg is thrilled. The final show also pulls no punches about how it feels politically with Buffy's protest song about war. John Sebastian, gone solo after Lovin Spoonful sings the kind of songs that led to the breakup of the group, as other members couldn't stand Sebastian's sugary, mellow ballads. However, he was a very popular counterculture figure during this time period. The discs true highlights come in the bonus material. The extra songs, taken from earlier shows include : Sonny James-Since I Met You Babe Zager and Evans-In The Year 2525 Tony Bennet-I Gotta Be Me; Smile Pete Seeger-Bring Them Home(This single performance probably killed the show) Johnny Cash-Blistered; See Ruby Fall Stevie Wonder-Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday Three Dog Night-Easy To Be Hard Smith-Baby It's You Janis Joplin-Try John Mayall-The Laws Must Change Judy Collins-Pretty Polly Of course, there are some stinkers too. Moms Mabley doing "Its You Thing", Della Reese singing "MacArthur's Park" and The Cowsills singing "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" are very forgettable. There are also some Bobby Sherman tunes and two versions of "Take A Message To Maria" from RB Greaves. All is not lost however as the songs can be accessed using your remote, skipping the gobblers for some great and rare performances of the best bands of the day.
Summary
Fans of artists from this era will want to pick up this DVD,a s it contains some real gems caught live on tape. The hip quality of the show rivaled the Smothers Brothers in controversy and humor, introducing acts from Billboard's charts never on television before. These gems have been preserved well by MPI and it sounds great.

Of course, Sir Paul McCartney is no stranger to DVD, as several of his concerts have been well documented on disc. And, with all due respect to his work as a solo artist, as long as he keeps dusting off all those great classic Beatle songs, he can really do no wrong. This disc is from his 2005 tour, featuring shows in which he greets (via satellite) the astronauts onboard the space shuttle, and a later performance which sees him welcoming them on stage to an enthusiastic crowd. Gratuitous? Perhaps, but heart-warming all the same. Also included are dozens of classic Beatles tunes, as well as some recent solo efforts. The solo tunes are pleasant enough, but don't provide the spine-tingling rush of the Beatles songs (the outstanding performance of "Eleanor Rigby" alone is worth the price of admission). Paul's backed by the best band he's ever assembled (the drummer in particular), and these guys know how to tear-it-up during heavier numbers like "Helter Skelter" & "Get Back," while maintaining a discreet back-up for ballads like "For No One." In between songs are several behind-the-scenes clips of Paul and his band chumming around, along with dozens of testimonials from celebs and tour mates about McCartney's influence on music & modern pop culture, as if anyone still needs to be reminded of that. Fortunately, those somewhat redundant accolades are individually chaptered, meaning you can simply skip to the great concert footage. Featuring terrific picture & sound, and peppered with some fun extras, "The Space Within Us" is a must have for McCartney/Beatles fans everywhere. From A&E Home Video.
