Review

Bob Marley, the father of reggae, is regarded by some as a god-like musician and this concert celebrates his music and message of love. Videotaped in Jamaica, this December 1999 concert boasts an all-star international cast hosted by the Marley family.
An abrupt beginning to the video hosted by Marley's wife begins with Lauryn Hill singing "Turn The Lights Down Low", a sexy, sultry rocker which gets the crowd going early. Following her performance, we are treated to Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, and a duet with Jimmy Cliff doing "Jammin". Erykah Badu, a personal friend of the Marley family, stuns the crowd with her tall turban of hair and is joined by Cliff once again for "No Woman No Cry", a real highlight of the show. This act is followed by another great singer, Queen Latifah, who brings a soulful rendition to "Who The Cup Fit". Darius Rucker sings "War", and The Black Crowes are represented by Chris Robinson. The one act I didn't care for was Busta Rhymes and Julian Marley, which I didn't think fit the mood of the concert with Rap songs. Other performers includes Toots Hibbert and the Wailers (Marley's group), and Tracey Chapman with "Three Little Birds". It was good to see a smiling Tracey Chapman, as she is not known for smiling a lot but this concert brought out the joy in everyone. The rest of the concert includes various acts combining with the Marley family members for different numbers, concluding with "One Love", which all the singers perform on stage together. It is a real treat for the eyes and ears throughout.

Inside Thin Lizzy-1971-1983/An Independent Critical Review

Category: Music Reviews
Thin Lizzy are legendary rockers with a storied past. The black Irishmen, Phil Lynott, became one of the most charismatic front men in music in the 70?s and early 80?s. His bass playing and vocals defined the Thin Lizzy sound on classic albums such as Jailbreak (1976) and Bad Reputation (1977). Lynott became another rock ?n? roll casualty unfortunately and the world of music misses his great talent dearly. Despite several outstanding albums, the band never received the respect that they deserved. Their defining moment was Jailbreak and the big hit ?The Boys Are Back In Town.? Inside Thin Lizzy-1971-1983/An Independent Critical Review is a review of each album by respected rock critics. I found it to be in depth and revealing. An added bonus is that there is rare archived footage of the band and Lynott available for the first time on this DVD. What I never realized back in the 70?s when I was a teenager listening to this music, is that Lynott was a true poet heavily influenced by his Celtic roots. The sound and atmospheres created in many of his songs were reflections of a proud heritage. Well, it happened again, after watching this DVD I went to Amazon and started putting Thin Lizzy albums in my shopping cart! It was great music and wonderful time for me, it is documentaries such as this that serve as a music history lesson and a reminder of some of the best rock music ever recorded. ?
