Review

The multi-talented Ray Davies and his legendary band The Kinks are bundled into this double feature DVD. The first segment Ray Davies: Return to Waterloo is about a rapist that travels throughout the city looking for victims while his good wife remains at home patiently awaiting the return of her estranged husband. One part of the storyline, a scene when the main character is on the train, was similar in some ways to Pink Floyd?s The Wall movie with the rebellious youth uprising against the status quo. The one thing that came to mind was the line?Teacher leave them kids alone. The story became boring very quickly and I was glad when it was over as I could move on to the more stimulating and more entertaining videos in the Come Dancing With The Kinks section. Well, at least I thought it would unfold that way. There are eight videos, three live performances, "Lola," "You Really Got Me" and "Celluloid Heroes," which was quite enjoyable but too short lived. Even though this is one of those more-bang-for-your-buck deals, it does not hit the mark. I suppose I am much too spoiled at this point because most of the DVDs that I view have a lot of great live footage and an overabundance of bonus features. This DVD is suitable for the diehard Kinks fans out there that want everything the band has released. ?"Keith "MuzikMan" Hannaleck September 7, 2003

Art of Live

Category: Music Reviews
Queensryche is an amazing group and seeing them perform live brings their legacy and music into focus. I highly recommend catching one of their live shows, in color. You are probably saying, why is he saying in color right? Well, amazingly enough this entire DVD, with the exception of three short interviews, is in black and white. Can you believe it? Now how dumb is that with all of the available technologies and effects you can include with a DVD today. What marketing genius decided to do this? It really is a shame because this is a great performance and this DVD will most certainly tank once everyone (with the exception of diehards) finds out it is all black and white. You figure maybe one song or parts of a song would be in black and white, that is quite common now, but not the entire performance! This is great music and vintage Queensryche. I really did love watching and listening to this band perform even though there was that nagging irritation that I just could not shake. Okay, I have made my point. I guess what made it all worthwhile was watching them perform with Dream Theater on the same stage the classic tunes "Best I Can" and "Won't Get Fooled Again," that in some way makes up for all the underlying disappointment. I have to admit it; if I read a review like this and was thinking about buying this DVD, I would be putting my wallet back in my pocket. ?
