Review
Very few artists in the 70's reached the extravagance of Rick Wakeman and his classical rock productions. Using an army of keyboards, Wakeman composed and arranged magnificent works which helped define classical rock. "Journey To The Center Of The Earth" was his second successful work, surpassing his critically acclaimed "VI Wives Of Henry The VIII" with a full orchestra and choir complement. This DVD was recorded live in Australia in 1975, at the height of Wakeman's popularity.
The DVD set from Music Video Distributors is a British import, from Classic Pictures Entertainment, as part of their Rock Legends catalog. It includes not only the full concert on DVD but also a separate CD for added value. Besides the entire "Journey" work, Wakeman treats the audience to selected excerpts from " Six Wives" and also from "Kin Arthur", his follow up work to "Journey". The concert line up is as follows: Catherine Parr Guinevere Journey To The Center Of The Earth -The Journey -The Recollection -The Battle -The Forest After this, Wakeman gives more from his other works: Catherine Howard Merlin Anne Boleyn The concert ends with an encore performance of The Forest Accompanying Wakeman are Guitarists Jeffrey Crampton and Roger Newell, Barney James on drums, Ashley Holt and Gary Pickford Hopkins on vocals, and John Hodgson on percussion. The Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra and Chamber Choir help out on the arrangements, conducted by Verdon Williams.
Summary
For those of us who lived through the classical rock period of the 70's and enjoyed it, this disc is a must have. Wakeman and company put on a spectacular show for the time and it is a real bargain with the accompanying CD. The technical quality of the disc is very good, although I long for 5.1 sound for such an event. Still, it is a good as technology allowed for the time.

Well another Kansas boxed set has hit our shores. That old ship is still sailing right along. It comes as no surprise that the popularity of this band has not waned over the years. Their staying power is evident with this three-disc set (two CDs and one DVD). You can still hear ?Carry on Wayward Son? playing on the radio frequently, after all that is one of the songs that defined an era. Clearly, it was more than just a 70?s thing. The musical juggernaut called Kansas has continued strongly into the new millennium, and they show no signs of slowing down. This is without a doubt the finest package that the band has released to date. The only thing that is left is a full-blown career spanning boxed including all their studio albums, rarities and outtakes. Of course, now you can get all of that from the recently remastered set of albums released earlier this year. This music never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many times I hear a Kansas song I pick up something different. They were, and remain an amazing unique band. Besides all of the best tracks from their career, now longtime fans get the best treat of all, live concert footage from the early Don Kirschner?s Rock Concert days, which I remember well, even though I was a crazed teenager back then. Included are old videos from the Monolith album period and more. This is the definitive and ultimate Kansas boxed set, so far. Funny, I said that about the Ultimate Kansas set too. I cannot wait to see what will come out next. I can never get enough of this band. ? Keith "MuzikMan" Hannaleck-http://www.muzikreviews.com October 7, 2004
