Review

When forced to think of Ted Nugent (which isn’t often, trust me), I like to think about a young, scrappy guitar player doing time in the garage and psychedelic music scene of the '60s. As a member of The Amboy Dukes, Nugent's chugging six-string work anchored the band's most well known song "Journey To The Center of the Mind".

Unfortunately, that Nugent is not on display on this DVD. It's not even the cocaine-abusing, loincloth sporting version that held sway in arenas across the U.S. in the '70s and early '80s. No, the Ted Nugent on this disc is the gun rights advocating, bow hunting, Republican chest beater who still has some redoubtable skills on the guitar, but acts like a buffoon every chance he gets.

There's the Indian headdress he sports while playing the last song of his set ("Great White Buffalo"), the eye-rolling double entendres he spits out on virtually every song here, and the rather curious decision to play in front of a large American flag (as well as playing a song dedicated to the U.S. troops) at Swedish rock festival.

It says something that the best song on this disc is a version of "Journey" tucked away as an extra on the disc. The rest – even the classics like "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Stranglehold" – sound downright desperate, the sound of a man getting on in years, but desperately keeping a death grip on the rock 'n' roll lifestyle.

Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains The Same - Special Edition

Category: Music Reviews
Though I'm not a die hard fan, I like Led Zeppelin, and have a few of their CDs in my collection. I don't listen to them as often as I used to, mainly because at any given moment, you can surf your radio dial and there's a good chance you'll stumble upon a Zeppelin tune. Right now there's a lot of Zeppelin hoopla. There's an umpteenth compilation CD out, their entire remastered catalogue is now available on iTunes, and the surviving members are doing a one-time reunion show in England. So it's not too surprising we're seeing a remastered special edition of this cult concert film on DVD.

Movie Quotes

Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it
doesn't take much to see that the problems
of three little people don't amount to a
hill of beans in this crazy world.
