Review

The second volume of “Adventures Of The Galaxy Rangers” is even worse than the first.

The plot is still the same as the first volume.  The Galaxy Rangers are an elite group of people who attempt to stop threats of any kind and assist anyone that requires help. Volume two contains episodes 33-65.

It’s not hard to see why “Adventures Of The Galaxy Rangers” never became a classic. It’s simply a bad animated children’s show. True, the animation and character designs are generally very imaginative and detailed, but animation alone cannot save a series. This second volume is actually even worse than the first. The voice acting is more laughable than ever, the characters are stilted, the creatures are goofy (especially the Kiwis and Brainchild) and the plots are all recycled from other shows. On top of that, the show frequently infuses 80’s elements (like clothing styles and music) which utterly ruins the series for me. The show is supposed to be set in 2086 not 1986!

Overall: The premise of ‘Galaxy Rangers’ looks promising on paper, but the show is poorly executed and has dated terribly. Skip it.

The fullscreen picture quality still looks cruddy. Even though I am not a fan of the show, the picture should at least be cleaned up or restored a little.

The Dolby Digital audio track isn’t bad, but the sound is lower than it should be.

Extras:

* 10 original underscore music tracks.

* “Memories Of Jerry Orbach” (5:00).

* A 1 minute Rangers Are Forever art slideshow.

* Commentary on the episodes “Marshmallow Tree,” “Supertroopers,” “Galaxy Stranger,” and “Battle Of The Bandits” by Robert and Henry Mandell and Christopher Rowley.

* A 10 minute interview with Robert Mandell.

* A 19 minute interview with Dan Fiorella and John Rawlins.

* The best part of this entire set is a 4 minute “Galaxy Rangers Kids Meal Promotion” that is shown off by Dan Fiorella and John Rawlins. You could really tell how excited and proud Dan was by having something he helped create made into a toy for children to enjoy. His enthusiasm was certainly infectious.

The Outer Limits: The Original Series - Volume One

Category: Quick Reviews
Of course, every self-respecting fan of classic science fiction horror should have the first season of this TV series in their DVD collection. And, chances are, they probably do. The original show has been released on disc before, and since this new set doesn't include any extras, what you're essentially looking at here is some fancy repackaging. But unlike the 2002 DVD release of Season One, this time you're only getting half of the first season, packaged as two double-sided discs. Sure, the episodes are quite good (though not as consistently clever as any season of "The Twilight Zone"), but since this new set doesn't improve on the picture & sound, the more adventuresome might be better off trying to hunt down the original MGM DVDs. From Fox Home Entertainment.
