Set in small town U.S.A, the story revolves around a middle aged man named Andy who dreams of doing something with his life. While contemplating his life in a bar, Andy comes up with the idea that he and his friends should make a pornographic movie. Of course, Andy and company quickly realize that their dream project will be harder to get off the ground then they thought. Will the adult movie ever get made? Will Andy and his friend's lives change forever? Tune in to find out. Even though "The Amateurs" is a fluffy Frank Capra wannabe that never seems to fully realize its comedic potential, it is still a charming little film about family, friends, and the dream of success/making money. Of course, even if you are a fan of the premise, the sole reason to see this film isn't for the story- it's for the all-star cast. Jeff Bridges, Lauren Graham, Ted Danson, Patrick Fugit, Tim Blake Nelson, Joe Pantoliano, William Fichtner and many, many others have roles in this film. Thankfully, however, the cast isn't reduced to doing cameo roles. Each and every cast member has a well-written character that brings a lot to both the story and the feeling that these characters inhabit this small town and really do know each other. It's because of this believability that the movie comes to life. The soft colored 1.78:1 widescreen picture quality is clear with the exception of some grain. The 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround track is solid all around. Viewers also have the option of choosing a Dolby 2.0 Stereo track. We learn how the cast got to know each other before production, how Jeff Bridges hated the script at first, and other fun facts. * Commentary by Jeff Bridges, Michael Trager, and Aaron Ryder. The trio give information about the long journey to get the film made, different cuts of the film, etc. Well worth a listen. Conclusion: With the sleeper hit "King Of California" and now the enjoyable "Amateurs," I recommend keeping an eye out for future First Look Studios release. I can't wait to see what they will be releasing in the coming years.
