Review

Of course, no one but undemanding 14 year olds expected "Alien vs. Predator" to be more than mindless action garbage. But I think even those misguided kids will think "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" is an insulting and stupid Hollywood product, catering to those entertained by ANYTHING they pop into their DVD player, and probably have never even HEARD of the two movie franchises on which it is based. Unlike other 'so-bad-it's-good' movies, this one commits the worst sin of all: it's boring.

Crudely written and directed, the action takes place in a sleepy Colorado town, populated by characters we don't give a shit about (and rendering this little more than a slasher film). But as a lifelong horror fan who tries to find the positives in ANY movie I watch (hell, I even gave "AVP" a semi-positive review), for the life of me, I could find NOTHING to recommend this one. Even if you overlook the dumb and bland characters, nearly all of the action scenes take place in the dark (made worse by staccato editing), making it almost impossible to see what's going on half the time. Anyone who isn't a total retard will be able to predict everything that happens long before it does, and the "chest-bursting" scenes which made the original film a classic takes on a new level of offense by showing an alien bursting out of a child.

What's depressing about a movie like this is we all know there's still a potentially-great "Alien 5" waiting to be made, yet Fox chooses to appeal to the lowest-common-denominator moviegoer by trudging out shit like this. Like the first "AVP", this should NOT be considered part of the"Alien" canon, nor part of your collection.

Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth

Category: Quick Reviews
Though original "Hellraiser" scribe Clive Barker had little to do with this second sequel, I personally think "Hellraiser III" is the best of the series. The previous two installments were good, but horror icon Pinhead (Doug Bradley) was never featured all that prominently, and when he did pop up, he was never the main villain (in "Hellraiser II," he's borderline sympathetic). Here, after a brief set-up, he's the whole nasty show, finally wreaking the spectacularly violent havoc we always hoped he would. The film's a bit heavy on the one-liners (like subsequent "Elm Street" sequels), and the story itself doesn't always play by the rules established by the first two films, but the movie is fast-moving, grimy, gory fun. From Paramount
