"Alpha Male" is a mediocre weepy drama.

The story of “Alpha Male” takes place in two different time periods. The main story sees a mother (Alice) struggling to reconnect with her son during his 21^st Birthday, and the second story is told via flashbacks (10 years earlier) in which Alice loses her husband Jim. The loss of Jim not only causes deep pain for everyone he knew and loved, but it also causes the family to drift apart. Will there be a happy ending?

“Alpha Male” is nothing we haven’t seen before. It’s a typical melodramatic weepy and sometimes sappy drama in which troubled/grudge-filled characters try to overcome their differences and reconnect with each other during a birthday party/re-union. I will admit that the cast does a commendable job here (especially Amelia Warner), but they can’t overcome the hackneyed script that suffers from some truly awkward scenes, and a downright poorly structured (and edited) story. I think writer/director Dan Wilde needs to learn how to properly integrate flashbacks scenes into a story, because they certainly never appear seamless in this particular film.
