The story: Nickie and Terry meet on board an ocean liner and fall in love. Sounds like a fairytale romance come true, right? Unfortunately, both Nickie and Terry are already engaged to be married. Will the two call off their engagements and marry each other? Will they ever see each other after the sea voyage again? Will there be a happy ending? "An Affair To Remember" is highly regarded as the quintessential weepie, romantic chick flick. It has legions of fans across the globe, but it also has many detractors who find the film to be painfully corny. As for myself, I fall into the latter group. There's a good film somewhere in this 115 minute running time, but it's lost amidst LONG conversations with Nickie's grandmother, gag worthy musical numbers involving Deborah Kerr and children, a drug out ending in which Terry's character takes an eternity to tell Nickie what happened to her, and sub-par acting by both Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant.
I am generally a big admirer of these two classic actors, but Grant walks through the role like a robot half the time, and Kerr overracts in several scenes (see her rant in the hospital bed). If you really want to see a quality romantic film, seek out "Say Anything" or "Before Sunrise." The 2.35:1 widescreen picture quality is decent. I love Technicolor, but this print was a bit grainy. Also, what is the point of another double dip? Why not reissue the film on hi-def instead? The Dolby Digital Stereo track wasn't mindblowing, but good enough for a drama. Extras: * Lobby cards * Trailer and poster and still galleries. * Commentary by Marnie Nixon and Joseph McBride. * "The Look Of An Affair To Remember" (9 mins.) takes a look at the cinematography and style. * A 56 second Fox Movietonenews. * Spotlights and history on Leo McCarey (22 mins.) and producer Jerry Wald (16 mins.) * Affairs To Remember: Deborah Kerr (5 1/2 mins.) and Cary Grant (10 mins.)- Deborah's husband and Cary's widow talk about the famed actress and actor. * "AMC Backstory: An Affair To Remember" is an informative 24 1/2 minute behind the scenes look at what went on off screen during filming.

Count Dracula

Category: Quick Reviews

There have been countless adaptations of Bram Stoker's chilling story of Count Dracula - so many in fact that I imagine that everyone who is a fan of the book or the character has their favorite.

This adaptation, cooked up by the producers at BBC in 1977, apparently had enough fans that they demanded for a DVD release of the two-part version, starring French actor Louis Jourdain as the titular vampire. Try as I might though, the only appeal that I can see of this program is its kitsch value, akin to the many fans of the '70s horror/fantasy TV show Dark Shadows.

The production quality of this is surprisingly shoddy, a fact that is amplified by the digital reproduction. As well, the jarring shifts between 16mm film and videotape are glaring and hard not to giggle at when compared to the slick look of most modern TV programs.

Finally, other than Jourdain, who slinks through this role with the assuredness and sly wit that only an actor of his caliber is capable of, the acting is ridiculously wooden. Considering how many great British actors have either gotten their start on BBC programs or lent their talents to them, I find it hard to stomach the idea that these folks were the best available to producer Morris Barry and director Philip Saville.

I wish that I could apprecaite this on a "so bad it's good", MST3K kind of level, but it misses the mark by a wide margin. This ones for the fans and the vampire completists only.
