"Appleseed Ex Machina" is a visually stunning, but poorly written anime feature film.
The story: Soldiers Deunan, cyborg Briareos, and Tereus face off against terrorist scientists who are determined to control the minds of everyone in Olympus in order to form a perfect society. As one can predict, a massive battle breaks loose.
"Appleseed" is eye candy plain and simple. The CGI animated futuristic city scapes, the cyborgs, aerial vehicles, gun/rocket battles are all gorgeous to look at. Unfortunately, the movie assaults you with so much fast-paced action that it becomes boring within 10 minutes. As the film runs a LONG 104 minutes, that's a lot of boredom to endure. Had screenwriter Kyoto Takeuchi's script been more focused on certain storylines instead of cramming in all sorts of ideas regarding cyborgs, terrorism, war, technology etc. the film might have fared better. Regardless of my opinion, I'm sure fans of the "Appleseed" series will get a kick out of this. However, I strongly recommend seeking out superior anime movies (see any Hayao Miyazaki film) and series (Death Note).
Extras: * Trailers for "Justice League: New Frontier," "Batman-Gotham Knight," "I Am Legend," "Speed Racer movie and game," "The King Of Kong," and "Journey To The Center Of The Earth." * "Teamup: John Woo and Shinji Aramaki" (16 1/2 mins.)- This featurette talks about how the collaboration happened and what the two each brought to the project. * "Revolution: Animating Ex Machina" is an 18 1/2 minute featurette on the CGI animation. * Commentary by Jerry Beck and Joseph Chou- This track is more boring than the film itself. They talk about story choices, CGI, etc.
"Appleseed" is presented in widescreen with a dyno-mite Dolby Surround 5.1 audio track.

Die hard Jackass fans be advised: even though the logo adorns the box, and the video prominently features Johnny Knoxville, serving as sort of a master of ceremonies, don’t expect the rest of the Jackass gang to show up with another menu of gross-out stunts. Instead, this disc is a rather fitting tribute to a man who could arguably be considered the ‘original’ Jackass, the late Evel Knievel. BMX star Mat Hoffman and several co-horts pay tribute to the man by performing various stunts similar to what Evel used to do in his glory days, and share stories about their encounters with him, and his influence on their own careers. Probably a fitting tribute Evel himself would approve of, though the scant 47 minute running time of this program (which originally ran on MTV) doesn’t really warrant the $24.95 retail price.
