This lovingly made documentary traces the roots of what is known as Sacred Harp singing, an overpowering form of worship that has thrived in the Southern U.S. and throughout the world. Using a 160-year-old hymnal, dozens of congregants get together on a weekly basis to sing a cappella worship songs for almost an entire day. The songs themselves are fascinating compositions using shape notes sung in different octaves, making for harmonies that, sung en masse as they are in these congregations, are soul stirring.

The filmmakers artfully weave a history of Sacred Harp singing in with interviews and footage of modern day practitioners performing in church settings. It in those talks with current Sacred Harp enthusiasts and worshippers that the filmmakers make a powerful statement on faith as well as offering a stark contrast to the modern trappings of megachurch services with huge worship bands and morality-driven sermons.
