Ah, the 80s...back when Linda Hamilton was still meow-meow hot, and Ron Perlman was one of the sexiest men on TV...at least until he was finally seen without his feline make-up and David St. Hubbins hair-do. Though it looks and feels a little dated now, if nothing else, "Beauty and the Beast" was a TV series which came closer to emulating popular fantasy/romance novels than any other TV show before or since, and earned a sizeable cult following in the meantime. This six-disc set from the show's first season arguably contains the show's best episodes (which, like most cross-genre, surpise-hit series, ran out of gas real fast), and Perlman is sort of a revelation in the role of the Beast. This set feature no extras, but proves to be a fun and endearing nostalgia trip for those who fell in love with this couple 20 years ago. From Paramount.

Idiocracy

Category: Quick Reviews
Here's hoping Mike Judge once again has the last laugh. His first live-action theatrical film, "Office Space," tanked in theaters, but quickly became a cult hit on DVD. "Idiocracy" is an even better film, but got even worse treatment by its distributor, only playing in a handful of theaters before being unceremoniously dumped onto home video. It's too bad, because it's more clever than many comedies released in 2006, and deserves a bigger audience than it's gotten so far. In this one, Luke Wilson plays a slacker who volunteers to be cryogenically frozen for an experiment. Through a mishap, he awakens 500 years later, and Americans have since become so ignorant and stupid that he's now the most intelligent man on the planet. A savage and clever satire of the self-centeredness & dumbing-down of society via technology & the media, "Idriocracy" is loaded with laughs, not to mention several instances where the viewer will say, "Hell, that's EXACTLY the direction we're heading!". If there's any justice in the world, this is a future cult classic. From Fox.
