“The Boston Strangler- The Untold Story” could have been so much more.

The Plot: Based on the real life killer (or killers), “The Boston Strangler- The Untold Story” attempts to give a more realistic view of what happened. We all know Albert DeSalvo confessed to murdering several women, but did he actually commit the crimes? This film gives the impression that Albert confessed to the crimes simply because he wanted to be famous and rich and that the killer is someone else.

After seeing what David Fincher accomplished with the gripping serial killer film “Zodiac,” “The Boston Strangler” looks like mere child’s play. The cast (led by former “Married With Children” star David Faustino) is all rather wooden and they all speak with possibly the worst Boston accents ever put to film (and that’s being kind). On top of that, the script is really all over the place. At first, the story focuses on the police investigation and then it shifts focus to Albert in jail. Why the change? I’m not quite sure. My guess is the filmmakers wanted to show different points of view. It’s a shame it comes off as being clumsy.

Another issue I had with the script was that the story was so full of fictional and non-fictional elements that it becomes a sloppy mess. I understand having to put in fictional material for the sake of crafting a story, but it helps to be historically accurate when making a biopic of sorts.

The widescreen picture contains blurry motions, but other than that it looks about average for an indie film.

The Dolby Digital Stereo track was so-so. The dialogue (and unfortunately the accents) sounded clear enough.

The only extras are trailers for “The Boston Strangler” and other Weinstein films and a commentary track by David Faustino, Michael Feifer, Andres Boulton, and Roberto Jiminez.
