Review

Of course, a Bruce Lee boxed set isn't really an 'ultimate collection' without "Enter the Dragon," (which ain't here, since it's a Warner title), but Fox has still put together a great package of 5 films that provide lots of slam-bang entertainment, as well as preserve some historically important milestones in Lee's all-too-short career. "The Big Boss" (aka "Fists of Fury") is Lee's first starring vehicle. "Fist of Fury" (aka "The Chinese Connection") is probably the kung-fu master's best film besides "Enter the Dragon." "Game of Death" was the movie he was working on when he died, and was finished six years later with the aid of doubles standing in for Lee; this one is worth watching for the climactic battle between Lee and various foes (including Kareen Abdul Jabbar, who looks hilarious as he towers over Lee, giving kung-fu kicks while wearing the shortest shorts I've ever seen). "Game of Death II" fashions a story using old footage of Lee in action...it's easily the worst disc of the five. All five discs are lovingly restored and feature some worthwhile extra features. All-in-all, a nicely packaged retrospective of a legend whose influence is still felt in the martial arts genre.

Toxic

Category: Quick Reviews

In some small way, I want to respect the makers of Toxic for both dragging Danny Trejo and Tom Sizemore back into the spotlight for a few brief moments and for constructing a movie that does not pander to the viewer but instead demands that you pay attention to the various flashbacks and flash-forwards utilized in a strangely Rashomon-like style.
