"The Car" DVD should be totaled.
Remember Steven Spielberg's tension filled classic "Duel"? "The Car" is similar, only this film is not what I would call "good." Granted, a few of the death scenes were entertaining and the location shooting at canyon roads and tunnels is first rate, but that's as much praise as I can possiby give this film. Much like the silly "Killdozer," "The Car" is simply another campy horror flick that focuses on an evil vehicle that murders innocent people. I defy anyone not to roll their eyes at the over the top music cues, the one dimensional characters, and the cheesy set pieces involving the car's overpowering smoke or the car smashing through a house. To make matters worse, James Brolin looks completely sad and embarassed in every scene of this clunker. Who could blame him? Skip this one and watch other vehicle centric horror motion pictures such as "Duel," "Joy Ride," or "Christine." For a catalogue title, the 2.35:1 widescreen picture quality and the Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track were surprisingly decent. Sure, there were some grainy spots and inconsistent audio levels, but overall it's a fine disc audio/visual wise. The only extra feature is a theatrical trailer.

This show was offered in the 80's and while the scenario was good, this disc sets' picture is sub par. Starring Jared Martin, this updates the Martian invasion, who have been reawakened (they weren't really dead) and seem much stronger then in the original film. They absorb human bodies but deteriorate once inside their human hosts. The pilot manages to explain away most of what has happened since the 50's invasion; however a glaring plot hole trips up this series as people don't remember the invasion at all, except for our professor hero. Hmm, seems as if our planet were invaded by aliens and half the cities of the world were destroyed, it would have made the papers. The picture on this is truly bad, looking like a copy of a badly dubbed video tape. While studios dig deeper in their vaults for television series to release on disc, this one should have been left there.
