As I have mentioned the plot in my reviews of volume 2 and the "Death Note" live-action movie, I'm not going to go into great depth about the story. Basically, the story follows a teen named Light who finds a note book which belonged to a God Of Death named Ryuk. With mere words, the book enables Light to wish death upon anyone he desires, but he mostly uses it to kill off convicted criminals. All he has to do is write the exact name of the person in his book while having an image of the person's face in his mind.
Volume 1 contains the first four episodes which are titled: "Rebirth," "Confrontation," "Dealings," and "Pursuit." As I've stated before, "Death Note" is one of the five best anime shows ever made. Every aspect of the show is worthy of the praise. The pilot/premise sucks you in from the first second, Light's physical and mental transformation from smart loner to killer is believable and unnerving, the voice over narration really gets you inside the head of Light, the cat and mouse game between L and Light is intense, the animation is gorgeous and atmospheric, and so on. I could rave on and on about this show, but I'll spare you readers from my ramblings. I implore you to go out and rent or buy this first disc even if you don't normally watch anime. Extras: * Production art. * Clean opening and ending. * Shonen Jump Home Video and Manga ads. * A Behind The Scenes look at voice artist Brad Swaile (who voices the character Light). (12:19) * Commentary on episode one by voice director Karl Willems. As he didn't create any part of the show, he doesn't have much to say. "Death Note" is presented in 16:9 widescreen with a Dolby Digital Stereo track. Viewers can watch the four episodes in English or in Japanese with English subtitles.

The Sci-Fi Channel's answer to "South Park," this CG animated series is another one that's definitely not kiddie fare, but the cover alone with tell you that. This 3-disc set of the first season is loaded with enough in-your-face smut, penis jokes and violence to amuse the average 13 year old, but for the most part, the show is seldom all that funny, featuring heavy-handed satire & gags you'll see coming from a mile away. Since "South Park" is pretty much the standard by which all potentially "outrageous" adult animated programs are judged, "Rift's" obvious attempts at public offense are tired and unoriginal. Despite treading such familiar waters, "Tripping the Rift" features some intersting CG amination, and one can't help but leer at 'Six,' the anatomically-impossible sex android. She looks like something out of "Heavy Metal" magazine as animated by Pixar. Unfortunately, her almost-too-lovingly-animated form makes her the only interesting character for all the wrong reasons; the others (including a gay robot, an obnoxious evil clown, and slob Captain Chode) are patchworks of cliches & characters we've seen before.
